Huawei begins a full-scale update of smartphones to EMIU 9.1 based on Android Pie - when OTA arrives, list of smartphones

Huawei begins a large-scale update of smartphones to EMUI 9.1

The initial list of updated smartphones, posted on the Chinese social network Weibo (from XDA developers), has now been officially confirmed by the Huawei brand. It includes about 49 phones that will necessarily receive the EMUI 9.1 update based on Android Pie. At the moment, only Huawei Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20X and Mate 20 RS receive the beta version of EMUI 9.1, while Huawei P30 Pro and P30 offer this system as pre-installed out of the box.

Until today, information about updating smartphones was unconfirmed, but thanks to Reddit, the data has become official - now we can safely say which devices will receive updates and when. The first to boast of the new system will be the Huawei Mate 20 line, which receives an update in June. In July, the old Huawei P20 and P20 Pro, along with the Mate 10 and Mate 9 series, as well as budget new products for 2021, will receive a system update and versions of Android. The last devices to receive EMUI 9.1 will be the Huawei P10 series - OTA will reach them in August.

We are already aware of how several devices are receiving the update, so we can safely say that there is some discrepancy in the schedule - the company is lagging behind and sending out the update later than promised. If you have a Huawei P20 Lite or any device from the Mate 20 line, you may have already received the 3.34 GB OTA.

EMUI 9.0 on Android 9.0 Pie officially announced for Honor smartphones

Huawei has officially announced the release of a new version of EMUI 9.0 firmware for smartphones of its Honor brand, developed based on the Android 9.0 Pie operating system. At the moment, we know about three devices that will receive an updated user interface - Honor Play, Honor 10 and Honor View 10.

EMUI 9.0 features an increased level of security for personal data, as the OS uses a special password storage. Its tasks include managing identifiers and credentials for sites and applications where you can log in with one touch of the fingerprint scanner.

Honor 10 will be among the first to receive EMUI 9.0 based on Android 9.0 Pie

Another important innovation in EMUI 9.0 concerns artificial intelligence. In the ninth version of the firmware, the HiVision smart assistant, based on augmented reality technologies, is available. It recognizes over five hundred tourist attractions in 15 countries and at least 10 million works of art in 40 cities around the world. To find out details about these objects, simply point the lens of the camera built into your phone at them.

The shopping function in HiVision works in a similar way: the user points the camera at an item of interest, and the device finds exactly the same one on online trading platforms. If the product description is in a foreign language, the application will automatically translate it into Russian.

Artificial intelligence technologies have found wide application in camera operation. A smartphone running EMUI 9.0 is capable of distinguishing up to one and a half thousand scenes, automatically setting the most appropriate shooting parameters in each case.

The “Digital Balance” control panel deserves special attention, in which you can track your own activity when using your smartphone, the duration of work with individual applications and the frequency of screen unlocks.

Communication capabilities of EMUI 9.0 include wireless connection of a smartphone to a TV or monitor, including for video games, as well as Huawei Share, a function for wirelessly sending documents for printing without the need to send files to a PC.

To summarize, one cannot fail to note the overall performance of mobile devices running EMUI 9.0 that has increased by 12.9% and the time it takes to launch applications. Especially for gamers, support for GPU Turbo 2.0 was added to the firmware, which, according to the developers, improved the quality of graphics in resource-intensive games and reduced response time to user actions by 36%. Finding the right settings has also become faster, since the navigation system contains 10% fewer items.

For smartphones Honor 10, Honor Play and Honor View 10, the EMUI 9.0 software interface will become available from January 4, 2021.

Preparatory stage

Despite the fact that each subsequent firmware version brings a lot of new functions, after the update some smartphones are unstable. This happens when the user ignores the preparation step.

Before installing updates on Huawei Honor 9, you need to meet 2 basic requirements:

  • charge your smartphone at least 30%;
  • perform a factory reset.

And if everything is clear with the first point, then the second raises many questions for some people. Resetting to factory settings completely deletes files from the smartphone's memory. This allows you to avoid errors when installing updates.

Of course, no one wants to lose personal data, so before resetting you need to create a backup:

  1. Open settings.
  2. Go to the "Storage and Backups" section.
  3. Click on the Google Drive heading.

  4. Activate the backup.

Performing these steps will result in the backup file being uploaded to cloud storage. After updating Android, it can be restored.

If there is not enough space on Google Drive to save all the data, it is recommended to create a backup copy through the “Backup and Restore” item. The resulting file should be moved to another device (for example, a computer) during the flashing process, and after the process is completed, return it back to the phone’s memory.

If the backup has been successfully created, you can safely proceed to restoring the phone to factory settings:

  1. Launch device settings.
  2. Go to the "Backup and Reset" section.
  3. Select “Reset settings”.

  4. Click the Reset Phone button.
  5. Confirm the operation.

Now you need to reboot your smartphone, and then proceed directly to the process of installing new firmware.
