Huawei Honor 8 Lite review – beauty requires sacrifice

Among smartphones in the mid-price segment, there is always a fierce battle for first place in user ratings. Each of the manufacturers is doomed to regularly update the lines of their devices, and must constantly offer some new solutions in order not to crash out of this peculiar race. The recently released Huawei Honor 8 Lite is one of these new solutions, the review of which we have prepared for you.

The device itself immediately stands out for its interesting appearance, amount of RAM and good level of performance, but despite this, it still has its drawbacks. Let's figure out if they are so important.

Specifications and price

The Honor 8 Lite model is presented to the general public in one version with 4 GB of RAM. The price starts from 16,000 Russian rubles. Characteristics:

  • Screen: 5.2 inches, Full HD (1920×1080 pixels), 423 ppi;
  • Chipset: HiSilicon Kirin 655, maximum clock speed 2.12 GHz;
  • GPU: Mali-T830;
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM, 32 GB built-in (+ micro-SD memory card up to 128 GB);
  • Battery: 3000 mAh;
  • Cameras: 12 MP main, 8 MP front;
  • Dimensions: 147.2 x 72.94 x 7.6 mm;
  • Weight: 147 grams;
  • Communications and wireless interfaces: Bluetooth1, Wi-Fi, 2G / 3G / LTE, GLONASS, GPS.

The smartphone was released with pre-installed version 7 of the Android Nougat OS and runs on the proprietary EMUI 5.0 shell. In addition, there are several flagship features, such as Smart Power mode, eye protection mode and improved Wi-Fi connection.

Appearance

Huawei Honor 8 Lite comes in a modest cardboard slider box, inside which you will find the smartphone itself, a charging block, a micro-USB cable, a clip for the SIM tray, headphones and documents.

The phone itself looks very similar to its older version, Huawei Honor 8, the only difference is the presence of a dual camera module on the 8 model. The 8 Lite version is visually attractive with a sparkling glass surface on both sides of the device, but this surface, which, by the way, has a 2.5D rounded effect, is not equipped with an oleophobic layer and, as a result, is practically not protected from external damage and fingerprints. The edges of the smartphone are plastic, not aluminum, as in the older version, so we highly recommend not dropping the Honor 8 Lite. We advise you to immediately purchase a protective case or bumper with your phone, since the back of it is quite slippery due to the glass surface. The gadget comes in black, white, blue and gold, with blue (or cyan) looking especially presentable.

On the front panel of the device there is a 5.2-inch display, and on the bottom there are functional smartphone control buttons. Above the screen there is a front camera, proximity and light sensors, a notification light and a speaker for talking on the phone. On the right, as usual, are the volume control keys and the power button, on the left is a hybrid tray for SIM cards, into which you can also install a memory card instead of one of the SIM cards. The bottom edge contains a multimedia speaker and the main microphone, the top edge contains a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a second microphone. On the back of the body there is a 12-megapixel main camera and an LED flash, and below is a fingerprint scanner, which, by the way, works almost flawlessly.

Honor 8 Lite is assembled almost perfectly, it can be easily controlled with one hand, and it lies quite comfortably in the palm of your hand even with a protective case.

Display

The phone has a 5.2-inch FullHD display with excellent brightness and a pixel density of 423 ppi. Also, the device screen has a high-quality anti-reflective coating, which allows you to comfortably work with the gadget even in the brightest sunlight. The MultiTouch function allows you to recognize up to 10 touches simultaneously.

As for the color rendition of the screen, it all depends on the brightness that the user has chosen. Sometimes there are strong dips in red tones, resulting in a slightly distorted image on the display. In all other respects, the Honor 8 Lite gadget 100% meets all the necessary requirements for a device in the mid-price segment. Nice features are the eye protection mode and automatic color correction, which the smartphone inherited from the flagships.

Where to find and how to set up an infrared port on Honor and Huawei

If you want to temporarily turn your phone into a control panel for some equipment, then enable the corresponding function. This can be done in the interface. In rare cases, you will need to download a utility or software that monitors the infrared signal and directs it in the right direction.

Where is

In 99% of smartphones, the built-in sensor is located on top of the screen at the end.

To activate it:

  • go to settings;
  • select the line with tools;
  • We look for a virtual or digital control panel among the proposed parameters;
  • drag the slider to the active position.

How to enable IR port on Huawei

Next, let's look at the instructions on how to enable the infrared port on Honor and Huawei step by step. Once you have activated the signal, you need to select the category of equipment you want to control. This could be a TV, stereo system, air conditioning, etc. We indicate the correct device model. Next, mark the necessary buttons and save what you specified.

Processor and memory

Traditionally, Huawei installs processors in its smartphones that it produces itself. The same applies to Huawei Honor 8 Lite – it has an eight-core HiSilicon Kirin 655 chipset with a maximum clock frequency of 2.12 GHz. The Mali-T830 accelerator is responsible for the graphics, and as for the memory, 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of built-in create a very good tandem, which is sufficient for any everyday interaction with the gadget. In the AnTuTu benchmark, the Honor 8 Lite smartphone scored 56.5 thousand points, which is not the highest, but sufficient. However, this model cannot be called a gaming model, because not every game will work without problems at the maximum graphics settings. But don’t worry: the smartphone will handle 90% of all games without question, without heating above 40 degrees Celsius.

Huawei Honor 8 Lite results in AnTutu Benchmark

In the popular AnTuTu benchmark, the Huawei Honor 8 Lite smartphone scores an average of about 56,500 points. This figure, like all those given below, was taken from the official website of the developer of this software. Unfortunately, we currently do not have detailed data on the device's performance in AnTutu.

Cameras

The main difference between the Huawei Honor 8 Lite is the single main camera module instead of the double one used in flagship models. It has a Sony sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, phase detection autofocus and 12 megapixel resolution. In simple terms, the quality of the images is very good for a model in the mid-price segment. In daylight, you get excellent pictures that are balanced in color and brightness, and in the evening or at dusk, the smartphone tries to reduce the amount of noise in the image as much as possible. Focusing here is excellent, white balance is almost always perfect. The front camera will easily allow you to take high-quality selfies and even slightly process the photo, but nothing more.

The smartphone records video in FullHD resolution at 30 fps from the main camera, and in HD from the front camera.

Which Honor and Huawei smartphones have an IR port?

Before setting up an infrared port on Huawei and Honor, check its availability on your specific device. This can be done simply by reading the operating instructions. There, in the configuration section, all external and built-in accessibility modules are indicated.

How to turn on the voice recorder on Honor and Huawei, where are the recordings stored?

In 2021, the following models come with this sensor:

  • Honor 3, 6;
  • Honor 7C;
  • 8 Pro;
  • 9 and 9 Light;
  • Huawei Mat 9 and Mat 20;
  • P9 Plus.

Before purchasing, be sure to check with the seller whether such a port is available on the model you have chosen. If yes, test it right in the store.

Sound

We cannot particularly highlight this characteristic, but everything is not bad. The main multimedia speaker in the Honor 8 Lite is quite standard for the middle price segment - it has a good volume reserve, but you shouldn’t expect high-quality sound from it. The bass here is rather weak, but the low frequencies in general can please those who have at least a little knowledge of this topic. The sound in headphones is generally not bad, but it is still better to adjust the settings in the built-in equalizer or using third-party applications.

Why doesn't the IR port work on Honor and Huawei?

If the program does not work, and the user has carefully studied the characteristics of the smartphone and is sure that the phone can replace the remote control, one should think about the causes of the problems and try to solve them. If you approach troubleshooting thoroughly, no difficulties will arise.

Causes

The reasons that prevent you from using the program usually lie in:

  • the failure that occurred;
  • need to update software;
  • incorrect operation of the service on early models of smartphones.

It is important to emphasize that in response to user complaints, Huawei has developed an application that allows you to bypass the difficulties and be able to control equipment using your phone.

Wireless Networks and Communications

The smartphone receives excellent communication and works in all available networks - 2G, 3G and 4G. The maximum data transfer speed is approximately 300 megabits per second, and this is enough for trouble-free playback of videos and movies online in FullHD quality.

In addition, in this model the manufacturer has implemented a very interesting function called Signal+, when used, the gadget independently improves the quality of the connection that is established, and this is not a publicity stunt, but a really working function.
