Huawei Honor 8S Prime and Y6p – comparison of smartphones

The editors of DGL.ru have a feeling that smartphone manufacturers are completely confused about the naming of their devices. In other words, they have forgotten how to name models so that it is immediately clear what class the smartphone belongs to, when it was released and what it can do. And for this reason, it can be very difficult to figure out what is in front of you - a budget device or a middle-class device, a current model or something from the past, a model for the Russian market or, for example, for China.

Therefore, we decided to launch a series of materials in which we will tell you which models from which manufacturers are included in which series, and what it all means. Previously, we published an article about the naming of Samsung smartphones, then about Xiaomi, and now it’s time for Huawei.

Samsung smartphones from A to S. We understand the models from the Korean manufacturer

Xiaomi smartphones from Redmi to Black Shark. We understand the models of the Chinese company

I remember that in the process of writing a text about Xiaomi, we were surprised at the chaos present in the line of this Chinese company; now that the preparation of the material about Huawei has been completed, we are ready to admit that with Xiaomi everything is very logical, neat and accurate. Yes, that’s right – everything can be learned by comparison...

Colors

The design of the devices is particularly attractive, but everyone has different tastes, so let's not judge the appearance. Honor 8S Prime has 3 colors: blue, blue and black. 3 colors are used as a solution for the Y6p case: green, black and purple. Both phones are available in the same number of colors.

For reference: there are 2.54 cm in one inch.

What's better - a large display that's easy to watch videos on, or a compact phone that fits easily into any pocket? There is no clear answer. Returning to the compared models, we note that the screen size of the Honor 8S Prime is slightly smaller than that of its opponent. The weight and thickness of the phones vary: Honor 8S Prime weighs less and is slightly thinner than the Y6p.

Budget segment

The greatest emphasis of any manufacturer is always on smartphones in the budget price category. Moreover, a low price does not necessarily indicate poor quality. On the contrary, today among state employees there are even models with an eight-core processor. For the convenience of buyers, the manufacturer came up with a designation for such phones in the form of the letter Y. That is, if you see this letter in the model name, then you should expect that the price for it will be affordable.

Among these phones we can name the following models: Y625, Y5II, Y3II, Y6 Pro and Y6II. All of them have a screen diagonal from 4.5 to 5.5 inches, and the most budget options even have a TN screen, in contrast to the current IPS matrix. As usual, each phone has its own “tricks”. For example, the Y6 Pro has a very capacious battery (4000 mAh), and the Y6II will delight fans with high performance, having an 8-core processor. Well, if you are interested in purchasing a device that optimally combines affordable price and high quality, then you should pay attention to the Y5II.

Understanding rulers

Previously, the Chinese had a clear segmentation between the lines, but in recent years people, horses, fish, KVN finalists and everything like that have mixed together. For example, the most popular Honor line has spun off into a separate brand (like Redmi and Xiaomi), now you can find both very simple handsets for $100 and powerful smart phones for $400, which lack only a couple of little things to reach flagship status. To make matters worse, the Chinese have taken up the strange practice of selling the same models in different countries under different names. First of all, this concerns the Nova series, in which almost every model has exactly the same analogue among other Huawei lines.

Huawei Y: bright and inexpensive smartphones

Initially, Y was a purely budget series of smartphones for the most undemanding. Initially, models like Ascend Y6 were strong options with good hardware and minimal load on the pocket. The series did not have any concept, nor did it have a general design vision. In 2018, a clearer vector of development emerged, with an eye on young people and students who want a fun, bright gadget, but are not ready to overpay for it.

Popular budget smartphones Huawei Y series and Enjoy Apple iPhone 11 128GB from 18,599 UAH. Apple iPhone 12 128GB from 23,099 UAH. Xiaomi Poco X3 Pro 128GB from 6,899 UAH. Apple iPhone 11 64GB from 15,783 UAH. Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 64GB from 5,499 UAH. Apple iPhone Xr 64GB from 13,200 UAH. Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro 128GB/6GB from 8,249 UAH. Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro 64GB from 6,295 UAH. Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max 128GB from 30,723 UAH. Apple iPhone 12 Pro 128GB from 27,930 UAH.

New smartphones remain inexpensive (the oldest Huawei Y6s 2019 32 GB costs only $150), but they have changed in appearance. Instead of boring gray and black bricks that you don't want to take out of your pocket, Huawei has released some pretty nice devices with a modern frameless design and unusual back covers with a leather finish. They have dabbled in this before, but these were one-time promotions in top models like Huawei Mate 30 Pro.

Here we have a truly unique design at a bargain price. If we put aside the appearance, then we will find ourselves with rather simple and unpretentious devices with modest hardware (4-core processor, 2–3 GB of RAM, a simple IPS screen with HD resolution) and ordinary single cameras. That is, this is a purely everyday smartphone with no claims for high performance. It is enough for surfing, social networks, instant messengers and light games. But in the Y line you often find NFC, which allows you to turn your smartphone into a wallet. For the $100 segment, this is still luxury.

About the manufacturer

Taking into account the fact that Huawei’s share in the overall market is steadily increasing, and Apple’s share is rapidly declining, it would be advisable to make a prediction that in the near future the company will overtake the Apple organization in sales and take 2nd position on the planet.

Unlike most Chinese brands, which have opted for budget-friendly models, Huawei is not afraid to compete with the likes of Samsung and Apple in the premium device category. The organization cooperates with many foreign companies that have already shown themselves in a positive light:

  • Google – together presented “Nexus 6P”;
  • Leica – flagship cameras;
  • GoPro is a unique “Quick” program for smartphones that allows you to process videos faster.

Statistics for 2021

In 2021, the company sold 153 million mobile devices across the planet, which is 10% of global sales.

If we compare it with 2021, sales increased by 9.9%, and in the middle and end of summer the company surpassed Apple Corporation in sales, taking 2nd place in the world ranking. The number of official brand outlets in 2021 was more than 42 thousand. In the Russian Federation, the percentage of sales is 11%, which is approximately 3 million smartphones sold.

The lineup

Today, most mobile electronics manufacturers divide their gadgets into series of affordable, mid-range and premium segments. The company we are considering has chosen a thorny path, and therefore in each series it is possible to find both expensive and affordable phones.

In total, the brand has 4 model ranges on the domestic market. Let's look at 3 main ones.

Y (Youth)

The segment is accessible, however, here it is possible to find devices even with eight-core chips. Aimed at people who are on a budget and want to pay the minimum amount for a phone. In addition, smartphones in this line are sometimes manufactured under the trademarks of cellular operators.

P (Platinum)

A more thoughtful line of the company. Smartphones can be grouped into the business segment and those “moving” towards the business segment. The lineup sells quite original gadgets. In particular, the P9 smartphone is selling well.

This series appeared relatively recently. However, it has already been able to occupy its own niche, and most Chinese entrepreneurs prefer this particular model range.

Mate

A line of phablets – smartphones with large displays. In addition, this series contains flagships, which, along with the P model range, are the face of the company. However, alas, the brand does not produce a model that would be able to compete with devices from Apple or Samsung corporations. One way or another, this does not prevent the company from improving its own position in the global market. In general, this series can be compared with Plus solutions from Apple or Note from the South Korean company Samsung.

Cost Policy

The cost of the devices offered by the company starts from 9 thousand rubles and reaches 109,000. Like other manufacturers from China that have entered the domestic market, the brand has a huge number of official centers. They can be found in various regions of our country. By the way, there is even a unique customer center located in the capital of Russia.

Pros and cons of the brand

The advantage is that the brand has a huge number of smartphones of different price segments. In addition, there are devices of different directions. It would not be superfluous to note that the company has already adapted to the Russian market and is trusted by many users.

The downside is that one way or another, it is impossible to mark a specific flagship device. The next disadvantage is that smartphones of different price segments are similar to each other. In other words, a user who purchased a model for 35 thousand may not feel the difference with an affordable device.

conclusions

We did not compare all parameters with each other, but only the main ones. According to these parameters, the Y6p turned out to be better with 6 likes, while the Honor 8S Prime had 3. What we liked about each model:

Honor 8S PrimeY6p
  • Thinner
  • Easier
  • More pixels per inch of screen
  • Larger screen diagonal
  • Screen resolution is better
  • Battery capacity is larger
  • Longer talk time
  • Front camera matrix resolution is better
  • There is an NFC module

Series P

Also flagship devices, like the Mate, but less boring and... more youthful, or something. In the case of the P-series, there is such an order that after studying all these Y, Nova, P Smart and Enjoy, you even want to cry. Currently on the market there is the P20, a flagship with two rear cameras, plus the P20 Pro, a flagship with three. Well, and also the local ugly duckling P20 Lite, which is also known in the world as Nova 3e (which we already mentioned above). And, in fact, that’s all. Full order. As is the case with Mate.

What's in 2021?

On one side of the price spectrum we are greeted by simple but interesting budget devices like Honor 8A 32 GB, which boast an interesting design and the presence of NFC (gorgeous for a $100 handset). At the other end you can find almost flagships of the caliber Honor 20 Pro 256 GB and Honor 20 128 GB. Both cost under $400 and are packed with the most: the flagship Kirin 980 processor, 6 – 8 GB of RAM, large built-in storage, fast charging, NFC, a powerful 4-lens camera and a premium metal and glass body.

Well, somewhere in the middle of the spectrum are the handsome Honor 8X 64 GB / 4 GB RAM and Honor 9X 128 GB / 4 GB RAM, which in our opinion are among the best smartphones for $200. The only thing I won't like is the slightly increased dimensions due to the large display. These are truly large smartphones even by modern standards.

Huawei P: business class

The P series smartphones are “Platinum” models, which are above average and belong to the “premium” category. Gadgets from this line quite successfully compete even with the leading representatives of the Apple family, while remaining more affordable. The main feature of the P flagship line is its very cool cameras, as a rule, this is where Huawei gets specialists from Leica involved, tests out some new features and sets performance records in tests.

Popular Huawei P series smartphones

But there's more to come. Huawei realized that not all entrepreneurs necessarily need expensive and high-status smartphones, so over time the P line has expanded greatly. After the flagships themselves, such as the P20, their inexpensive modifications, the Huawei P30 Lite 64 GB, began to appear with a modified design and simplified hardware. The unspoken slogan of the Lite line is a powerful and high-status smartphone without overpayments. At the same time, pumped-up Pro versions with even more powerful filling also entered the market.

Then a separate sub-line P Smart appeared - still presentable, light and stylish smartphones, but at a bargain price in the region of $200 - 250. Thanks to their design and relatively small dimensions, they are often chosen by the fair sex.

If it seems to you that this ball is not completely tangled, then hold on. In 2021, a small Nova line was born, which informally belongs to the P family. As a rule, these are modifications of already released smartphones with minor changes in hardware or design. The advantage of the line is that it combines the advantages of the premium segment with advanced features, and at the same time, the models in this series do not “bite” in price. Perhaps it is the Nova series that is characterized by the least homogeneity. For example, some models run on Qualcomm processors, others Kirin, and the price can range from $200 to $500.

Summary: P Smart - balanced smartphones up to $200, Nova - middle class up to $400, P line - purebred flagships.

P Smart Series

These are devices that are in many ways similar to the Nova series models - in design, capabilities, and ideology. Well, that is, this is no longer a cheap Y-series, but they seem to be far from flagships. In short, a reasonable middle class. The Nova 3i described above is sold in some places as P Smart+. Last year's P Smart model (available in Russia) has no analogues among Huawei smartphones known to the Russian ear, but is the twin brother of the Huawei Enjoy 7S model for the Chinese market.
