Huawei Watch 2 2021: Design
In appearance, as well as in name, Huawei Watch 2 2018 is almost identical to Huawei Watch 2 2021.
The first difference is in the color scheme: the Watch 2 2018 is now black with green details. At first glance, the plastic strap combined with the heavy body is a little confusing. However, after using them for several weeks, the comfort exceeded my expectations.
The body is made of metal and has a round shape. By the way, paired with a plastic wrist strap, the watch is practically not felt on the hand. In short, we forget about their presence on the hand.
The belt has a large number of small holes that are necessary for sweating.
Huawei Watch 2 2021: Features
Among all the features, “eSIM Dual Terminal” is considered the most important one in Huawei Watch 2 2021. The smartwatch can support eSIM (dual device card) service. Also, without connecting to a smartphone, the watch is able to perform functions such as calls, access to the Internet, etc. In addition, it also supports independent SIM card function, which will be useful for those people who want to have a card with a separate number on their watch.
Thanks to built-in fitness functions, Huawei Watch 2 2018 is ideal for sports. Interesting features include tips for improving physical activity.
Huawei Watch 2 2021 comes with a galvanic sensitivity sensor for skin analysis, as well as oxygen data collection to help users evaluate and improve athletic performance. And, of course, the watch is completely waterproof.
The smartwatch also features: NFC, GPS, heart rate sensor (PPG), barometric pressure sensor, CAP capacity sensor, ALS/ambient light sensor, galvanic skin sensor, dual microphone, eSIM or Nano SIM support.
Screen
Diagonal 1.2 inches, AMOLED matrix, 390x390, protected by Gorilla Glass. The image is clear, bright, color reproduction is good, and readability in sunlight is adequate for this type of display.
After Amazfit bip with a transflective screen (on a mirror substrate), it was difficult to use a regular one. Transflective is good because it always reflects light. That is, even in the dark under a flashlight you will see everything. And the brighter the sun shines, the clearer the picture. Well, AMOLED has to glow constantly; in direct sunlight it fades. In general, to find the most “watchable” dial, you will have to rummage. Although it all depends on your preferences. For example, there are many good options with large numbers, but they do not have a step count mark (which is important to me) or a date.
The screen is touch-sensitive and the response is clear.
Software, notifications
The watch runs on Wear OS from Google. The new 2.1 arrived recently, I didn’t expect such agility from Huawei.
Wear OS is a simplified version of Android for watches. The main screen is the desktop (watch face). The choice of options is not very large, but you can choose something to your liking. The contents of the screen can be customized, but not always the way you want - it depends on the watch face itself. “Covers” have two options - for the active screen (bright colors, a lot of information, animation is possible) and for the standby mode (monochrome mode, a minimum of displayed data - usually time and date). Below in the photo are third-party dials.
However, in programs with third-party watch faces, they are usually 1) eye-catching, similar to the themes for Symbian in 2005 2) paid 3) in some way incompatible with your watch.
Of all the evils, Facer is my favorite. Although, after a number of experiments, I returned to the standard “Elements” option - a clock in the middle and three circles on which you can hang what you need (for me - the number of steps, calories burned, battery charge) and the date. Yes, the time is too small, the font is thin - it’s not always possible to read it without turning on the backlight. But what can you do? All third-party options are often slow when updating data on the screen, and may reset them altogether.
The top hardware key calls up the menu - there are standard applications and those preinstalled by the manufacturer, arranged alphabetically. The most recently launched programs are moved to the top of the list. You can also move the applications you need higher with a long tap, so as not to constantly scroll through the entire list. There are no folders. It doesn’t bother me, although more and more third-party software is appearing for Wear OS, and someday it may become too much for someone.
Among the useful system programs are messages, Google Fit (activity tracking, dozens of types of trainings including house cleaning or rock climbing), contacts, flashlight, Google Maps (quite adequate for this screen size, it gives hints if you start navigation on your phone), calendar, weather, reminders, multimedia control, phone search, translator, flashlight (brightly turns on the screen backlight with a white background), Google Pay, Google Play. From Huawei, the watch received a convenient application for tracking training, sleep, heart rate, “Battery” (you can turn on the energy saving mode and optimize the system), as well as pre-installed Runstatic.
There are quite a few third-party apps available on Google Play. For example, the “wearable” version of Telegram is perfectly implemented. There are clients for music and news services, watch faces, compasses, workout trackers, primitive toys and other small utilities. Installing and uninstalling software is possible directly from the watch.
To access the curtain, you need to swipe down on the desktop. From there you can quickly get to the settings, turn on airplane mode, sound, and energy saving. A handy little thing is turning off the screen (clock icon). Useful at night, since even without active backlighting, the AMOLED pixels are quite bright. Also, in this mode, you are not disturbed by notifications other than the alarm clock.
Swiping to the left brings up activity statistics from Google Fit, swiping to the right brings up Google Assistant. He doesn’t speak Russian to me yet, but he speaks Polish or English quite well.
Swipe down for notifications. I like that they are full-fledged, unlike bracelets - the text is visible in its entirety, photos are displayed, you can scroll through everything and even reply. The programs provide ready-made answer options (this option can be disabled in the settings), or you can enter your own - from a micro-keyboard (clearly tracks touches), or better yet, by voice (understanding at an excellent level in most languages).
To indicate a notification, the watch gently vibrates. In the reviews I saw complaints about weak vibration, but for me it’s ideal, why shake your hand. As a delicate alarm clock, such a vibration response is the same.
When you receive a notification, it appears on the screen for a few seconds and scrolls as needed. That is, if you immediately glance at the screen, you can see what’s new, without needing to unlock the watch or activate the display.
Long press on the watch face to call up its settings (or select another option).
The above gestures apply to Wear OS 2.1
, in the previous version everything was a little less convenient.
By default, the watch is always active in the sense that the touchscreen recognizes touches (which turns on the backlight). I found this inconvenient, so for me they lock after a couple of seconds of not being used, and then the screen can be “woke up” by pressing a key. In the settings you can enable various gestures, including those for rewinding notifications, but I find it more convenient to use the touch display for this.
In general, I will say that I am satisfied with the system - functional, completely autonomous (you don’t need a phone to set up any little thing, as is the case with bracelets), expandable. The only thing is that sometimes it’s too thoughtful, the speed of the same Apple Watch is as fast as the moon. I believe that the new generation of watches based on the Snapdragon Wear 3100 chip will be faster.
I’ll add that to use the watch you still need a smartphone, how could it be otherwise. You will need to install Google's Wear OS utility. But the settings and options there made the cat cry.
Sports functions
As noted, the watch comes with several workout tracking apps. You can choose any one. I am satisfied with the standard one from Huawei - the fonts are large, important data is on the screen, and at the end of the workout detailed information is shown, including the VO2max level. The pulse is monitored constantly. Of course, there is GPS, which provides confident outdoor tracking. During the run, a short summary (time, speed, etc.) is given every kilometer. I also like the quality tracking of strength training.
Photo - Uberizmo . I didn’t make my own, but you can admire another cool color option for the Huawei Watch 2 Sport case.
Huawei has a Health app for smartphones. Simple and informative, I prefer it to Google Fit.
In general, there are no complaints about the sporting capabilities. And much more useful information compared to many fitness bracelets.
Additional chips
The watch is “stuffed” to the fullest - LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth. Bluetooth – for communication with a smartphone (transferring data to applications, receiving notifications), Wi-Fi for accessing the network bypassing the smartphone (if there is no access, then the smartphone’s network is used).
Regular nanoSIM is supported (this is rare for smartwatches; now they rely on eSIM, which does not work in Russia), the SIM card is installed in a slot under one of the straps. In automatic mode, data transfer through this card is disabled to save money if there is a connection to a smartphone (calls to the watch will also not be received). If it is not there, then a SIM card is used to access the network and make calls. You can leave home, leave your phone and continue to receive notifications from applications and even SMS from your number - great!
You can also make calls from the watch, as well as receive calls. Use speakerphone or wireless headphones. If a call comes in on a connected smartphone, you can reject or accept the call on the watch. However, in the second case, the call will be received on the phone - you cannot conduct a conversation through the watch itself.
By the way, about headphones. The watch has 4 GB of memory, you can load music and listen to it while jogging. Even without headphones, if you want, there is a speaker, which is quite good for its size. If desired, install Google Music and enjoy your favorite tracks via streaming.
If you listen to music on your smartphone, you can control it from the watch; the corresponding interface is activated automatically. And it doesn’t matter where exactly you listen - Deezer, Spotify, regular player.
The ability to pay by the hour is, in my opinion, a must-have. Very comfortably. I don’t see the point in paying 15-20 thousand for such a gadget without working NFC.
Keep in mind: although the Google account is shared, your maps on the watch will have to be added again, apparently for security. But there are no difficulties. Then, if you need to pay, simply activate Google Pay (from the “curtain”, from the dial or a programmable key) and bring the watch to the terminal. The NFC connection takes a little longer than when using a smartphone, but it’s not critical.
One caveat is that Google Pay will ask you to enable a screen lock code. This can be a dot pattern (this was popular in older versions of Android), a numeric code, or a word (the tiny keys make it awkward to enter).
So, here’s a nuance: first, in order to save battery, I turned off regular heart rate monitoring in the settings. And from then on, the clock began constantly asking me for a lock code when I tried to pay! Given the slowness of the Google Pay app, it was hemorrhoids, sorry. Finding a card in your wallet or getting out your phone would be faster. Some cashiers even thought that something was wrong with me and restarted the terminal. When I turned on heart rate monitoring back, everything was ok. That is, they check that the watch is on your hand, and then they let you pay without additional checks. Huawei does this. As in other models, I don’t know.
Huawei Watch 2 2021: Performance
The screen is a 1.2-inch OLED with a resolution of 390x390 px and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. The watch weighs 57 g and measures 45 x 48.9 x 12.6 mm and is waterproof according to the IP68 standard. In addition, Huawei Watch 2 2021 runs on the new version of Android Wear 2.0 and also supports smartphones running Android 8.0.
The watch is equipped with a Snapdragon 2100 processor with 768 MB RAM and 4 GB internal memory. Thanks to the NFC sensor, the device supports various payment systems: Huawei and Ali Pay, in addition to the WeChat system.
It's worth noting that today only a few smartwatches are truly suitable for everyday use. Huawei Watch 2 2021 is one of them. This is one of the most stable smartwatches I've used. And although the device is equipped with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 2100 processor, which was released quite a long time ago, and has only 768 MB of RAM, the Watch 2 2021 works without delays or glitches.
In addition to stability, battery life has also improved significantly. The battery life of Huawei Watch 2 2018 is up to days and a half days on a single charge.
Smartwatch Huawei Watch
Expensive round watch in a metal case
Huawei is one of the latest leaders in Android smartphones to enter the smartwatch market. The model with the simple name Huawei Watch was announced back in February 2015, at the Mobile World Congress 2015 exhibition, but only reached store shelves at the end of the year. And she immediately found herself in a very competitive environment, where she had to fight for the attention of consumers with the much cheaper Asus ZenWatch 2 and Moto 360 of the first generation - and at the same time she had to somehow attract the attention of wealthier consumers who were eyeing the Apple Watch or Moto 360 of the second generation. Quite naturally, Huawei decided to rely on design, equipping the new product with an all-metal body and a round screen.
True, unlike Apple, Asus and Motorola, Huawei did not offer two screen sizes to choose from, limiting itself to the only option with a 1.4″ diagonal, but providing various options for the case and straps.
At the moment, two models are available in the official Russian online store of Huawei: with a silver metal case and a leather strap (for 30 thousand rubles) and with a black metal case and a metal block bracelet (38 thousand rubles).
In the international online store the choice is much wider: there we can choose from six models. The cheapest (silver with a leather strap) costs $350; options with the same case, but metal silver bracelets (block or Milanese weave) will cost $400.
The black version with a block bracelet (which is also available in our store) costs $450 in the West. Finally, the most expensive are the gold-plated models: with a leather strap (embossed on it imitates crocodile skin) - $700, and with a gold-plated block bracelet - $800.
As we can see, the price range is quite wide, but, on the other hand, even the most expensive Huawei Watch model is still much cheaper than the most expensive Apple Watch model (with a black block bracelet). What can we say about the Apple Watch Edition made of gold alloy!
And yet, even the 30 thousand that the manufacturer asks in Russia for the cheapest version is a lot of money, so you need to understand how adequate the Huawei Watch is to this amount.
Let's take a look at the specifications of the model we tested.

As you can see, the Huawei watch is the heaviest, and the difference is huge (although the version of the Apple Watch with which we are comparing it also has a steel case), and its screen has the highest resolution.
It is significant that, with dimensions similar to the smaller second-generation Moto 360 model, the Huawei Watch has a slightly larger screen and higher resolution, as well as being one-tenth of a millimeter thinner. Motorola does not indicate the weight, apparently because options with different cases and straps weigh differently.
Another significant point is that Huawei does not report that its watches are protected from moisture (unlike Motorola and Samsung). However, Apple watches also have no protection.
Equipment
The watch arrived to us without packaging, only a charger was included.
It is a round platform the size of a watch case, on which four contacts are placed. The platform is magnetic, so just bring the back of the watch to it and it will be magnetized so that the contacts align.
In the case of a very expensive watch, I would like to see wireless charging (like the Moto 360, Samsung Gear S2 or Apple Watch), but in terms of functionality this solution is no worse. The charger is quite compact, so it will not take up much space during transportation.
Design
The first thought when looking at the watch is “How massive it is!” Indeed, the watch is large, very heavy, and clearly masculine (although Huawei actively uses top model Karlie Kloss in its advertising). Perhaps the options with leather straps give a different impression. But we've only seen the version with a metal block bracelet - and it seems like a truly brutal men's accessory.
The watch gives this impression due to the all-steel case, rather large steel hinges and the absence of any rounding of the edges. In addition to this, around the screen we see a bezel that rises about a millimeter above the level of the glass, so visually the watch case appears thicker than if this bezel were not there.
On the right side of the case there is a metal button that allows you to exit to the main menu (long press) or go to the dial (short press). We also saw a button with similar functionality on the Asus ZenWatch 2 - this is clearly a trend of the season.
On the back of the case you can see the heart rate sensor and contacts for connecting the charger. It is significant that, unlike the Asus ZenWatch 2, where the back surface is made of plastic (while the rest of the body is metal), the Huawei Watch even has a metal back, and the central area where the sensor is located is made of glass. Apparently, this is sapphire glass - the characteristics of the Huawei Watch indicate Sapphire crystal, but specifically in the description of the case materials, and not in relation to the screen. The official specifications do not say what kind of glass protects the screen. One thing is for sure: there is not an ounce of plastic here.
The block bracelet is quite traditional. It detaches quite easily - just press the two levers at the hinges on both sides of the case, and the strap can be removed. The bracelet clasp is also typical. We press two buttons and the bracelet unfastens.
The traditional problem with block bracelets is the difficulty of fitting them to your arm. To reduce the girth of the bracelet, you need to pull out the blocks (sections). To do this, you need to fix the bracelet and, with very great force, use a thin awl or a thick needle to press on the knitting needle holding a specific block. It should come out the other side, and then you can disconnect the block. And it’s easier, of course, to go to a watch workshop. By the way, Apple implements this process much more elegantly: each block there has a button, by clicking on which we can pull out the section. But the cost of this bracelet is more than the price of the entire Huawei Watch.
There is no point in talking about the ergonomics of the Huawei Watch: if a metal bracelet seems comfortable to you, then there will be no problems here. If not, then the answer is obvious. It's a matter of taste. And the design of the Huawei Watch bracelet and case is not much different from classic watches. However, before purchasing, it’s worth considering that there are no options with silicone straps, so playing sports in this watch will be problematic (and you’re unlikely to want to, given the weight and thickness of the case).
To summarize, we note the use of only “noble” materials (no plastic or silicone!), the classic appearance of men’s watches, the absence of any decorative elements (except for the button, which still has a functional load).
Screen
The watch is equipped with a round color touch screen made using AMOLED technology. The screen resolution is 400×400, which with a 1.4″ diagonal gives an excellent pixel density of 404 ppi. In addition, a big advantage of the screen is the absence of dead zones (remember that all Motorola smartwatches have them). That is, the screen is completely round.
The editor of the “Projectors and TV” section, Alexey Kudryavtsev, conducted a detailed test of the screen. His expertise is below.
The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is scratch-resistant. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (effective, noticeably better than that of Google Nexus 7 (2013)), so fingerprints are removed much easier and appear at a lower speed than in the case of regular glass. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are slightly worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 2013 screen. For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected when the screens are turned off:
The screen of the Huawei Watch is noticeably lighter (brightness according to photographs is 151 versus 109 for the Nexus 7). Note that there is a not very pronounced bluish halo from bright objects reflected in the screen. There is no double reflection, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen. When the white field was displayed in full screen, the maximum value (5 on the scale) of brightness was 324 cd/m², the minimum (1 on the scale) was 47 cd/m². Considering the anti-glare properties are not the worst, on a sunny day outdoors, screen readability should remain at a more or less acceptable level. There is no automatic brightness adjustment, which, given the high minimum brightness, is not very good, especially for a watch. In the graphs of brightness (vertical axis) versus time (horizontal axis), you can see some significant modulation:
There is also some visible flickering, but the screen clearly does not flicker over the entire area at the same time, but somehow in waves, so the flickering is still not very noticeable.
This screen uses an AMOLED matrix - active matrix organic light-emitting diodes. A full-color image is created using subpixels of three colors - red (R), green (G) and blue (B), while there are half as many blue subpixels (but they are larger in themselves), as confirmed by a fragment of a microphotograph:
For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.
The spectra are typical for OLED - the primary color areas are well separated and appear as relatively narrow peaks:
Accordingly, the coverage is noticeably wider than sRGB, and there are no attempts to reduce it:
Note that on screens with a wide color gamut without appropriate color correction, ordinary images optimized for devices with sRGB screens look unnaturally saturated:
The color temperature of the white and gray fields is approximately 7000 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is 2.4 and 1.2 units, respectively. Color balance is acceptable. Black is just black from any angle. It is so black that the contrast setting is simply not applicable in this case. When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the white field is excellent. The screen has excellent viewing angles with a much smaller drop in brightness when looking at the screen at an angle compared to LCD screens, but whites at angles take on a slight blue-green tint. In general, the quality of the screen can be considered quite high.
Huawei watch faces and proprietary apps
Huawei Watch runs on Android Wear version 1.3. Some time ago it was reported that version 1.4 would include support for a speaker, which Huawei Watch actually has. However, at the time of writing, an update for the watch in question was not yet available.
Against this background, the news that LG has recalled the entire batch of second-generation Watch Urbane watches, among the main features of which is the ability to make calls via LTE and talk directly through the watch, without a headset, looks interesting.
In general, on the one hand, there is every chance that this feature will appear for the first time in Huawei Watch. On the other hand, it is unknown when exactly the software update will be released and whether it will actually be possible to use the speaker in the Huawei Watch.
We have written about other features of Android Wear many times, including the peculiarities of operating the OS on watches with a round screen and how to work with an iPhone. So we refer you to previous articles. Here we will talk about those points that concern only Huawei watches: these are Huawei watch faces and applications.
So, Huawei offers 39 pre-installed watch faces, and another 15 can be downloaded for free. These 15 additional dials are very extravagant options, for everyone. It is difficult to see the time on them (see screenshot under this paragraph on the right). The main 39 dials are a completely different matter. Among them are many stylish options that are perfect for Huawei watches.
Here are a few of our favorite options.
As you can see, there is plenty to choose from. And due to the fact that the watch case is a silver “metallic” color, dials of different colors look equally good on it.
Some of the watch faces have settings that allow you to change the color of elements or the source of information. Moreover, this can be done directly on the watch, without touching the smartphone. Here are these dials and their settings.
As for the pre-installed Huawei applications, there are only three of them: “Pulse”, “Load” and “Monitoring”. “Pulse” starts a one-time heart rate measurement, “Load” starts a countdown of the time of physical activity, and “Monitoring” contains information about your activity for the day and the number of calories burned. In general, there is nothing unusual here.
In general, the set of pre-installed applications is, of course, more modest than, for example, Asus, but the presence of a large number of good watch faces is pleasing.
Autonomous operation
The battery life of the Huawei Watch is average, which is not surprising given the not very capacious 300 mAh battery. A day and a half - you can count on about this amount of time working with the screen always on. Or one and a half to two days if the screen is off.
Now there are watches that work longer - for example, Asus ZenWatch 2 or Apple Watch.
conclusions
We welcome another player in the smartwatch market with Android Wear OS, but we note that the option turned out to be very controversial. The undoubted advantages of Huawei Watch include a round screen with a very high resolution and no dead zones, the use of high-quality case materials (steel, sapphire glass), and a relatively low cost in the version with a metal block bracelet.
But when it comes to price, the key word here is “relatively.” Indeed, if we compare the price of a Huawei Watch with a block bracelet and an Apple Watch with a block bracelet, then Huawei watches will cost significantly less, more than half. But this does not mean that this option itself is cheap. And the bracelet here is still not as interesting as the Apple Watch.
If we compare Huawei Watch with Asus ZenWatch 2, then the picture will be different: with a significantly lower price, Asus ZenWatch 2 may turn out to be a more attractive option than Huawei Watch. Don't discount the first generation Moto 360 and LG Watch Urbane either. All these models can now be bought cheaper. True, we cannot say that we liked their design more than the design of Huawei Watch. But the appearance of the Huawei Watch does not cause such delight - rather, calm approval. He is too ordinary, neutral. It seems that there is nothing to criticize for (except perhaps for the thickness and weight, but in terms of thickness the other watches are not much better, and some even like the heavy weight), however, there is no strong desire to own them.
The position of Huawei Watch in the Russian market is complicated by the absence of some alternative versions of straps - for example, a braided metal strap or a leather strap a la crocodile. Still, a block bracelet is not a universal option at all, and an option with a smooth leather strap can hardly surprise a buyer, because other smartwatches have similar leather straps. In general, the faster Huawei can present the full range of possible Huawei Watch options on the Russian market, the more optimistic the prospects for this device will be in Russia. But in future versions of Huawei watches I would still like some unique feature, an undeniable trump card. For example, Asus ZenWatch 2 has this price, Samsung Gear S2 has original controls and an operating system made specifically for a round screen... What about Huawei Watch? The Apple Watch has a steel case with sapphire glass, as do metal bracelets, and many models have a round screen (including those without dead zones). So it turns out that the product seems to be worthy, but it does not have any serious competitive advantages.
Finally, we invite you to watch our video review of Huawei Watch, which clearly shows the design and features of the model.
You can also watch our video review of the Huawei Watch smartwatch on filmdepo.ru.
Conclusion
Huawei Watch 2 2021 has about the same battery life as the Apple Watch. If you have an Android smartphone, then the new smartwatch from Huawei will be the best choice. iPhone users should, of course, pay attention to the Apple Watch.
Huawei Watch 2 2021 is currently only available on the Chinese market at a price of 270 euros. A Bluetooth version is also available for 205€.
