Huawei Honor 7A Pro - review of a budget phone in a plastic case with an 18:9 screen and a single main camera

We tested and wrote a review of the budget smartphone Honor 7A Pro.

The release of Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus - budget smartphones with full-screen design and decent specifications - was a big event. Users can get used to the fact that even for around 10 thousand rubles you can get an excellent device that meets the latest trends in the mobile market. Honor 7A Pro is just one such device that is designed to compete with Xiaomi Redmi 5. The advantages, disadvantages and features of the smartphone are described in detail in our review.

Review and technical specifications of Huawei Honor 7A Pro

Huawei Honor 7A Pro is the most budget model in the brand’s range, which, despite the affordable price tag, received a full-length screen, high-quality sound, a good main camera and a number of other features, which I will talk about in a full review of the smartphone in Russian.
The manufacturer wants to strengthen its position in the budget segment, where at least Xiaomi will provide it with worthy competition. This is the only thing in which the manufacturer has not yet succeeded, because in the mid-range and flagship segment it feels great, being among the first to introduce technologies and set new trends. For example, it was after Mate 10 that everyone began to actively introduce artificial intelligence into their smartphones, and now the brand has started the fashion for a triple main camera. But in the budget segment, everything is not so good yet and he is trying to correct this by offering Honor 7A Pro with facial recognition technology in 24 parameters, a separate slot for MicroSD and other features that you will learn about during the full review. This is a good option for those who have a small purchasing budget, but at the same time want to get a high-quality product with a good set of modern functions at a price of 9,000 rubles, or even cheaper.

Honor 7A Pro smartphone review: A new milestone

It’s quite interesting to follow the development of budget smartphones, because sooner or later they get the features of flagships. Today we are reviewing Honor 7A Pro - a budget smartphone with facial recognition technology, a fingerprint scanner, a FullView screen with an 18:9 aspect ratio, a 5.7-inch diagonal and the latest version of Android 8.0 Oreo, but is everything so good? Let's figure it out.

Design, assembly and ease of use

If you look at the development of Honor smartphones with index A, then we can say that the design of Honor 7A Pro is both progress and, to some extent, regression, and I will explain why, but a little further. Let's start with the fact that in Russia this smartphone will be available in black, blue and gold colors, well, all the basic colors are there, but I would like to see another bright option. We are testing a smartphone in the most “businesslike” color – black.

The entire front side of the smartphone is covered with tempered glass without any hint of an oleophobic coating, that is, fingerprints are collected on it very readily, but are difficult to wipe off. Honor 7A Pro is equipped with a “frameless” FullView display with an aspect ratio of 18:9, but I won’t deceive you, of course, it has frames and they are visible to the naked eye, but what’s nice is that the screen-to-front ratio has become much larger than the previous Honor 6A model. The set of elements on the front panel is quite standard and everything is in the usual places, on top there is a speaker grille, light and proximity sensors, a rear camera lens and an auxiliary flash, at the bottom there is only a clearly visible Honor logo.

From the reverse side, at first glance, it seems that the back cover is metal, this is due to its texture and two silver lines that imitate chamfers, but that’s not the case, in fact it is a pleasant matte plastic that gets dirty easily. Let me remind you that the Honor 6A had a metal back cover, and here’s the regression. On the back side there is a fingerprint scanner and a main camera lens with flash in a convenient place. There is a small silver plastic insert around the camera that will prevent the lens from rubbing, and special thanks for the fact that the camera practically does not protrude.

The frame of the case is made of graphite-colored plastic, the same in appearance as that used in Honor 4A/5A. The right side is traditionally occupied by the volume rocker and the lock key; the keys have precise travel and a loud click.

On the right side there is a tray that we have all been waiting for. Finally, you can install two nano-Sim and a MicroSD memory card up to 256 GB at the same time.

At the top there is a 3.5 mm Mini-Jack slot, at the bottom there is a micro-USB charging and synchronization connector and two symmetrical grilles, the main speaker is hidden behind the right, and a microphone is hidden behind the left.

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to call the Honor 7A Pro a breakthrough in terms of design; there’s nothing special about it, and many manufacturers have already shown budget smartphones with a 16:9 aspect ratio display. But in terms of ergonomics, this is an excellent smartphone and even due to its small diagonal, you don’t always have to grab it.

Assembly is a controversial point; on the one hand, when using the smartphone, nothing creaks or wobbles, on the other hand, when pressing from the back side a little above the Honor logo, the lid is pressed a little. Decide for yourself whether this is considered a disadvantage.

Where is it profitable to buy?

Display

As we have already said, this smartphone uses an IPS matrix with an 18:9 aspect ratio, a 5.7″ diagonal and a resolution of 1440×720 pixels. Color reproduction is not bad, but the colors are clearly lacking in saturation, and the only color that is okay is red. By default, the color temperature is a little “cool,” but this can be easily corrected in the settings. The display brightness is at a sufficient level, of course not so that you can read books comfortably under the bright summer sun, but you can view notifications without problems. What you can't take away from the display is its excellent viewing angles.

Among the additional functions, I would note eye protection from UV radiation, which can be activated manually each time or set a schedule. This feature helps reduce eye strain at night.

Camera

The camera application has a similar interface to flagship Huawei/Honor smartphones, but has noticeably fewer shooting modes.

The main camera module is 13 megapixels, the aperture value is not disclosed, but it is known that a phase detection autofocus system and a single-color LED flash are used. Photos in normal lighting turn out quite good, as for a state employee.

Video can be shot at a maximum of FullHD 30 fps, but its quality remains in question.

The front camera is 8 megapixel with f/2.2 aperture, autofocus and LED flash. And here Honor made the right move, while most competitors cannot “see” anything in the dark, the 7A Pro, thanks to the rear flash, will be able to take a photo, and sometimes not a bad one.

Performance

The Honor 7A Pro is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 chipset with Adreno 505 graphics, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. The same combination worked last year in Honor 6A, so in terms of performance, the smartphone did not step forward. It copes well with everyday tasks, but sometimes it can become thoughtful even when opening the settings. This may be due to pre-release firmware. In benchmarks, it also scores typical for its price segment.

This smartphone is clearly not for gaming, and while you can play simple games without problems, World of Tanks: Blitz works quite stably at minimum settings, but you won’t be able to enjoy playing PUBG Mobile; it constantly freezes, especially in urban locations.

Software

Everything is fine with the software, the new Android 8.0 is used, and on top of it is the proprietary EMUI 8.0 shell. The EMUI shell is well known to us, but since I have a pre-release version of the software, I’ll draw some conclusions.

Autonomy

The autonomy of the smartphone is ensured by a non-removable battery with a capacity of 3000 mAh and, paired with not the most productive hardware, this is enough for one day of fairly active use with 3.5-4 hours of screen operation, which is not bad. And if you need more, energy-saving and super-energy-saving modes are available, but the functionality of the device is limited in them.

Sound

The sound of the Honor 7A Pro is excellent for a budget smartphone. The main speaker is loud and the low frequencies are even slightly felt in its sound. The speaker is also high quality and loud. Speaking about the sound in the headphones, it should be noted that it is much better with the active Huawei Histen effects. It drives headphones with an impedance of up to 46 Ohms at full volume without any problems, there is no sense of dullness in the sound, but if you connect something more serious, the power deficit becomes noticeable.

Safety

Like its predecessor, Honor 7A Pro is equipped with a fairly fast fingerprint scanner, capable of remembering five fingers, which can also be used to control the smartphone: scroll through photos, open the notification shade, answer a call, etc.

Among the innovations is a facial recognition system, the function works thanks to the camera, and this is not the safest solution. But, if you have nothing to hide, then this will be a great addition. Although I will say right away that the function works well only in good lighting, in all other cases it is much more convenient and faster to unlock the smartphone with a fingerprint scanner.

conclusions

Honor 7A Pro is a logical update of the line in a more modern way; now in the budget segment we have access to a “frameless” screen, and I would call this the main innovation. Of course, a facial recognition function has been added, newer software has been installed, but there are no major changes. Although I personally assumed that the body of the new product should have been made of metal, which would have been logical, since Honor 6A took a step in this direction - it had a metal back cover. In all other respects, this is a good smartphone, but it has quite a lot of competitors, including in official retail.

Honor 7A Pro will be available for sale on April 26 for 8,990 rubles.

Where is it profitable to buy?

Equipment

Honor 7A Pro comes in a durable cardboard box containing the following contents:

  • Charger;
  • MicroUSB cable;
  • A paperclip for quick access to SIM card trays;
  • Display protective film;
  • Small instructions and guarantee.

The only thing missing is a bumper, which can be purchased separately, so that the smartphone is already protected from all sides and you don’t have to worry about it during use.

Honor 7A Pro design

The review of Honor 7A Pro 16 gb showed that they didn’t bother too much with the design of a budget smartphone, as is usually the case. In this regard, Huawei Honor 7A Pro can hardly be distinguished from previously released models - Nova 2i and P Smart. It’s good when a brand has a recognizable design, but it’s never a bad idea to create devices that are really interesting from the outside, so that each new smartphone stands out with its design, and not turn production into a continuous assembly line.

The front side is made as simple as possible and does not offer any design frills. There are frames and they are quite large, even on the sides of the screen, which is not very good, but forgivable for a budget employee. There are no keys at the bottom, but the Honor family logo flaunts, which looks nice. The front panel is covered with protective glass with an oleophobic coating, but of very mediocre quality. Whether it is there or not, the fingerprints remain permanently, and removing them will not be so easy.

As the review of Honor 7A Pro 16 GB showed, sensors, a selfie camera, a flash for it, a speaker, and an indicator were placed above the screen, thanks to which you will always know about missed events. The Huawei Honor 7A Pro smartphone also has face unlocking, but it only works in good lighting and there is a noticeable delay.

All corners are rounded, due to which the body does not dig into the palm and does not try to slip out. The material for the manufacture of the side frame was metal, the surface of which can be black, blue or gold. The version in the blue case looks the most original; we are all already accustomed to classic colors and want something new.

In the review of the Huawei Honor 7A Pro smartphone, I found out that its back is flat and made of plastic, which was used in order to save money. Yes, it’s not the best option, because for this price you can find a budget phone with a metal body, but Huawei always sets the price at a level higher than its competitors and tries to compete with the strongest market players such as Apple and Samsung.

There are plastic antennas at the top and bottom of the cover, but the solution is questionable, because the plastic case has no problems with signal reception quality. This was done rather in order to create the appearance of a metal case, because it is precisely in it that such a design is needed. In my opinion, it would be much better without them, the backdrop would seem much more attractive.

In the upper left corner there is a single main camera, an additional microphone and a flash. Closer to the center there is a fingerprint scanner and a corporate logo at the very bottom.

The Huawei Honor 7A Pro phone turned out to be quite compact - 152x73x7.8 mm, and also weighs a little - 155 grams. It is not as pleasant to hold in your hand as models with a metal or glass body. You immediately understand that this is a budget device, for the assembly of which one of the most affordable, but less reliable materials was used. The build quality is impeccable, and the plastic itself is quite durable. In any case, during testing it remained in perfect condition, not a single chip or scratch appeared.

The bottom edge is occupied by the MicroUSB port, the main microphone and speaker, hidden under the perforation.

The good news is that the smartphone retained the classic 3.5 mm headset jack, which was installed on top.

On the right is the volume rocker and power button. They are not particularly convenient to use, since they are thin and made almost flush with the body. They press easily and have a clear movement.

On the left there is a tray in which you can put two SIM cards and a separate one for MicroSD. This is a very convenient solution, because there is not much built-in memory, and not everyone is ready to give up a second operator card.

Honor 7A Pro

Advantages

- Performance: the latest OS - 8.0, RAM - 2GB and total memory - 16GB is enough for my needs. — Battery capacity: lasts up to a day and a half with active surfing. — Simplicity and intuitiveness of customized interface settings. — Screen characteristics: 5.7 diagonal, responsive and very sensitive multi-touch. - Build quality. — The camera is quite good, the main one is 13 MP, and the front one is 8 MP. It was not a criterion when choosing a phone, but it became a nice addition.

Flaws

- No. To avoid any misunderstanding regarding the pros and cons of this phone, I’ll explain a little the criteria for choosing characteristics when selecting a smartphone. I looked at different manufacturers. Xiaomi and Meizu did not measure up for various reasons, Asus used it for several years, the main problem is that it simply gets ungodly hot under load or while charging, which, by the way, greatly affects performance - either work “on the brakes” or wait until it cools down. In the end, I just got tired of holding a cracked stove in my hands, and this problem is very common among this manufacturer. I considered TP-LINK, only based on technical characteristics and reviews - it was a good option when comparing devices, but, alas, I did not find a single device in the showrooms, and none of my friends used this device, buying something “is not I felt it” - I don’t like it. ZTE is a good option, but in the price segment up to 9 thousand rubles. I did not find an analogue in terms of technical characteristics of the Honor 7a pro. All that is listed in the “advantages” column are the characteristics that were presented to the phone when looking for a new device, with one condition - the price is up to 9 thousand rubles. Of all that was selected for comparison, taking into account the required technical characteristics and price, I could not find a better one.

Commentary

A nice addition for me were some functions that I didn’t consider when choosing a phone: - Fingerprint scanner: responds quickly, you can scroll through photos. — Facial recognition: a fun thing, but a little stupid for me. — Two slots for a SIM card and a separate slot for a flash drive: in the reviews, many complain that it is impossible to use 2 SIM cards and a flash drive at the same time, since there are only 2 slots and you need to choose “either - or”. I have only one SIM card, but this might be important to someone. By the way, I updated the flash drive to series 10, and the phone became faster. — When purchasing, the interior included covers and protective glass. The selection of cases is small, but their availability, given that the phone only went on sale closer to the beginning of May 2018, is a nice addition. ps for those who want more memory: RAM - 3GB, main - 32GB; to have a dual camera with a “blur” effect, to have an NFC function, I advise you to look at the Honor 7C. But there the price is 2 thousand rubles. higher. Also, if it’s not critical for you to wait for your order, then I advise you to order on the official website - they give you nice additions to your phones as a gift. ps I uploaded a photo, but it’s not a camera phone, but if you do some magic with the phone, the pictures are quite good. I repeat, the camera was not a criterion when choosing a phone, but it was a pleasant surprise.

Honor 7A Pro display

A full review of Honor 7A Pro turns to its screen, which has an 18:9 aspect ratio, which is high time for all new smart phones, regardless of price category. The 5.7-inch display operates at HD+ resolution (1440x720 pixels) - not the best result, with a pixel density of only 282 ppi.

You can see individual pixels, but during normal use they do not cause any discomfort. Although, of course, the Honor 7A Pro display is very far from flagship level. This is an IPS matrix with wide viewing angles and natural color reproduction, supporting up to 10 touches simultaneously.

Smartphone review: Honor 7A Pro 16 Gb black showed that the maximum brightness level of 450 cd/m2 makes it comfortable to work with the phone under any conditions, even if you are in bright sun. Considering the cost, this is a very good indicator. With a significant tilt, the color rendition goes into warm tones and the colors are even slightly inverted, but this only appears at a strong tilt, as no one uses a smartphone. As for a budget employee, the screen is very commendable, but the matrix itself and the quality of its calibration are at an average level.

Honor 7A Pro is a very interesting smartphone. If you look at the appearance of the device, it is the spitting image of the iPhone 7 Plus. The back cover of Honor 7A Pro is very reminiscent of the flagship of the American company. There is nothing wrong with this - for the budget segment this is a fairly common and proven move, because the buyer is subconsciously led into this trick: why come up with your own marketing if everything has already been done for you and it has been written down in the buyer’s subconscious what a “beautiful smartphone” is. The design of Honor 7A Pro is quite typical, as for most smartphones from this company: an elongated body, a fingerprint scanner on the back cover and a large “Honor” inscription on the beard of the phone - after this you definitely won’t confuse it with smartphones from another manufacturer. The buyer will have several color variations of the Honor 7A Pro to choose from: black, blue and gold. The Honor 7A Pro case is plastic. The plastic is of high quality, nothing creaks or bends - the assembly is excellent, but no one will tell you now how wear-resistant this material is. It's probably better to use the Honor 7A Pro in a case - it will be more reliable. The layout of the smartphone controls is all standard. There is nothing criminal about the dimensions and weight of the smartphone, despite the rather large diagonal - the phone will easily fit in the palm of the average person: height - 152.4 mm, thickness - 7.8 mm, width - 73 mm, weight - 150 g.

The screen of Honor 7A Pro corresponds to its price category. For a smartphone for 9,000 rubles, it received the maximum: IPS matrix, HD resolution, rounded and protected 2.5D glass. The Honor 7A Pro did not deserve the oleophobic and anti-glare coating, so fingerprints will remain on the screen with great joy. By default, the color rendering on the Honor 7A Pro display is slightly blue, but this can be easily corrected in the settings. The matrix itself is of high quality, naturally transmits all colors, it fades a little at an angle, but it’s not critical; the maximum brightness of the display could be higher. The screen ratio is 18:9, the display itself occupies 75% of the usable area of the front panel - there is no smell of absolute framelessness here.

The hardware of the Honor 7A Pro could be better, but given the cost of the gadget, you can put up with it: about 50,000 points in Antutu - you can work with it. The entry-class chip from Qualcomm, Snapdragon 430, is responsible for the speed of operation. The chip is eight-core, built using a 28-nm process technology. The video core is Adreno 505. The RAM capacity is 2 GB, and the internal storage size is 16 GB. It is possible to expand the built-in space for files up to 256 GB with microSD cards. Of course, a pair of 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory looked more logical in the Honor 7A Pro, but the company decided not to push progress forward. Honor 7A Pro is not a smartphone for gaming, but the system itself on the phone running this hardware will work stably - you don’t have to worry about that.

The smartphone's cameras do not show any outstanding results, especially the main one: a regular 13 MP sensor that can record video in FullHD, has dull autofocus and takes good photographs only in the bright part of the day. But with the front camera of Honor 7A Pro you can get very good pictures: 8 megapixel selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture, autofocus and LED flash. By the way, with its help you can not only take successful self-portraits, but also unlock Honor 7A Pro using the FaceUnlock function. The technology only works during the day—you won’t be able to unlock your phone using your face at night, but it’s still cool.

In terms of autonomy, Honor 7A Pro will not surprise you: 3000 mAh, fully charged in an hour and a half, non-removable battery. If we translate all this into numbers, then from the Honor 7A Pro you can get 3-4 hours of screen operation at maximum brightness - for most, this smartphone will last until an overnight charge. In general, Huawei phones have never suffered from problems with fast discharge. The new product runs Android 8.0, and on top of it is the proprietary EMUI 8.0 shell

Performance and synthetic tests of Honor 7A Pro

Alas, the technical characteristics of the Huawei Honor 7A Pro do not shine, because it uses a weak Snapdragon 430 processor, made using an outdated 28-NM process technology. It includes 8 cores that accelerate to just 1.5 GHz. This is enough to avoid any delays when working with the interface, but there is nothing to count on in games. Most of them will run on minimal graphics, but not all of them; this is what reveals the budget orientation of the device.

The processor works in conjunction with the Adreno 505 graphics accelerator. If it is not heavily loaded, it works fine, but under high loads brakes appear. I conducted a test in games in PUBG and the result was disastrous - stuttering occurred even on the lowest graphics.

Huawei Honor 7A Pro test in Antutu and GeekBench

There is 16 GB of memory installed inside, which also works slowly - the read speed is 113 MB/s, and the write speed is 53 MB/s. This volume will not be enough, so it can be expanded with MicroSD up to 256 GB, for which, fortunately, a separate slot has been allocated. RAM is also in short supply - only 2 GB; in terms of characteristics, Huawei Honor 7A Pro is inferior to Xiaomi, which offers much more sophisticated characteristics for the same price.

Unfortunately, the Honor 7A Pro arrived for review without a box or accessories. According to official information, the kit includes the device itself, a charger, a USB cable, a paper clip, a screen protector, a user manual and a warranty card.

Wireless communications Huawei Honor 7A Pro

Huawei Honor 7A Pro can work with two Nano SIM cards, which feel confident in 4G networks. The rest of the characteristics are typical for a modern budget Android device - Wi-Fi is only 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 4.2, as well as support for OTG adapters, so you can connect a regular computer flash drive and watch movies from it on the road, for example.

For navigation, GPS and GLONASS resources are used with a location accuracy of 9 meters. Sensitivity is at the highest level - even indoors, the smartphone can easily find satellites, and in open areas there are up to 35 of them in the field of view, and it connects to 15.

Price and main characteristics

The recommended price for Honor 7A Pro in the 16/2 GB version is currently 8,990 rubles.

The smartphone received the Android 8.0 Oreo operating system with the proprietary EMUI 8.0 shell.

Autonomy of Huawei Honor 7A Pro

Huawei Honor 7A Pro review shows that it has a built-in 3000 mAh battery. Yes, the capacity is far from record-breaking, but taking into account the low screen resolution and weak processor, we get about 4 hours of display operation with active use. In video playback mode, the smartphone sits down in 7-8 hours, and in games about 5, although the list of games on it is very limited due to insufficient performance. The Huawei Honor 7A Pro smartphone battery was tested at maximum brightness.

It takes 1 hour 45 minutes to fully charge the phone from a charger with parameters 5V/2A.

Camera overview

The manufacturer didn’t play tricks with the cameras and although it seems that there is a double module installed at the back, in reality there is only one and this is better than shoving a second one just for show. It shoots in 13 megapixel resolution and has an f/2.2 aperture. The optics include five lenses, and the front camera is represented by an 8 megapixel module with a slightly better aperture ratio - f2.0.

Huawei is one of the best manufacturers, which is especially successful in terms of cameras. This is visible not only in the flagship segment, where it competes well even with Samsung flagships, but also in the budget category. The Huawei Honor 7A Pro review makes it clear that it is no exception to the rule. Yes, the photo taken with it cannot be called ideal, but in the budget category everything looks decent - there is minimal noise, the white balance is determined correctly. Huawei uses good software algorithms that get the most out of the camera. The detail of objects in the frame is average, and autofocus quickly focuses on the subject. But at night, due to the low aperture, a lot of noise appears.

Example photo on Huawei Honor 7A Pro

Selfies turn out good if you take them during the day. The only thing is that, at least on the current firmware version, the white balance fluctuates. This should be corrected in the future.

Honor 7A Pro can shoot video in FullHD with 30 frames per second for both cameras. The quality is standard for its price category. The sound is quite pleasant and is recorded in stereo format. Conclusion

It is quite possible that Huawei Honor 7A Pro will become a successful model, because on board it has everything you need for comfortable work. Yes, it performed poorly in games and is inferior in performance to its competitors, but it has decent battery life and cameras. Also among the shortcomings are the plastic body and the average quality of the screen, which is not calibrated from the factory in the best way. For 9,000 rubles you get a reliable smartphone that will be a good choice for everyday use if games are not that important to you.

The main competitor will be Xiaomi Redmi 5, which outperforms the hero of our review in all respects. For its price, it will be much more interesting, offering a more powerful processor and battery, and not only that.

From what we wrote above, you already understand that we consider the Honor 7A Pro to be a good smartphone. However, everything would be great if it were alone on the market, but it has competitors even among its brother smartphones. This year, Huawei rolled out three, essentially identical, smartphones at once. You are now looking at their images and, most likely, you think that we somehow inserted an image of one of the three smartphones into the table, but no - they all look the same. By the way, in technical terms, the smartphones are incredibly similar: screens of the same quality, identical “brains” in the form of the Snapdragon 430, 13 MP main cameras and a 3000 mAh battery. However, there are still minor differences. For example, Huawei Yu7 Pro is clad in an all-metal body, while Honor phones are content with a plastic solution. It is also worth noting that Honor 7A and Huawei Y7 Pro have modifications with 3 GB of RAM, and they have 32 GB of permanent memory - this is generally a definite plus for these gadgets. If we were to make the final choice among these three, we would take the Huawei Y7 Pro. Yes, it is more expensive than the others, but it is more relevant: it has the largest screen, decent cameras, 3/32 GB of RAM and ROM, a metal body - it is not an obvious leader.
