You need a tripod - it takes a long time to shoot timelapse, sometimes up to several hours, and it is absolutely impossible to hold the camera motionless in your hands all this time. If you don't have a tripod, choose a place to film where you can safely and securely place your smartphone while it records video. You also need an external battery (powerbank), otherwise the smartphone may run out before you finish filming the movie of your dreams, and endless hours of waiting will go to waste. Finally, you need a memory card (or maybe more than one), or a large amount of built-in one: the videos are long, there are a lot of videos, the resolution is high, all this will require a significant number of gigabytes.
The smartphone must be switched to “Flight” mode so that a friend’s call or an advertising message from the operator does not interrupt the video recording.

Which Honor and Huawei smartphones have an IR port?

We make our first attempt at time-lapse filming on the road, near Moscow City. We didn't have a tripod with us, so we had to use a car clothespin with a suction cup, placing it on the curb. Fixation of the smartphone is very critical - even small shakes will be visually aggravated due to the acceleration of the video and spoil the final picture.
Another nuance of shooting concerns scenes with changing lighting - sunsets and sunrises. You will experience a step change in exposure. To justify program developers, let's say that even for professionals this task does not have simple solutions.
The result of time-lapse shooting is quite unpredictable and this makes it very interesting. For example, it is impossible to predict what shape a cloud will pass across the sky in a few minutes. If you are photographing a beautiful sunset, will the solar disk be visible at the moment it touches the horizon or will it be covered by an approaching cloud. And finally, won’t some dog come to see what you’re doing here and block the camera of your smartphone!
But let's get back to the test shooting. When building the composition of the frame, it was possible to focus on the sky and the top of the buildings without capturing the horizon in the frame - the plot would be about how the clouds move and the movement is reflected in the glass.
But we did it differently - we brought passers-by into the frame. On the one hand, this is a contrast of measured and fast movement, and on the other hand, it was interesting to see what people look like when photographed by a specific smartphone model.
Some will not be impressed by the measured movement of clouds in the frame, combined with the bustle and flickering of fast objects - be it people, cars or tree branches swayed by the wind. But just don’t think that “you can’t shoot like that!” - do not limit either others or yourself. Surely, some of you will find your own style and compelling stories with deliberately fast movement. Try it! And while we were talking about the nuances of filming, the timer beeped - the camera was filming for 10 minutes. As a result, 20 seconds of clouds flying over the Moscow City were born. As you can see, you will need patience, and your smartphone battery will need a full charge.
In Honor 9, the captured timelapse goes into the “Camera” folder and is duplicated in the “Video from the camera” collection. The smartphone makes it possible to edit a time-lapse by cutting off the beginning or end of the video and leaving only the significant part with the culmination of the event.
Why the IR port does not work on Honor and Huawei
This technical service, like many similar ones, suffers from failures and breakdowns. If this happens, we look for the reasons. Next, let's look at what they are.
Causes
Among the most common causes of problems with the infrared port are:
- phone problems;
- incorrect button settings;
- poor connection, interference;
- lack of utilities and drivers that would optimize signal operation;

Hardware and performance
Honor 9 is powered by the Kirin 960 chipset. The same chip is used in Huawei Mate 9 and Huawei P10. It is an octa-core processor consisting of four Cortex-A73 cores at 2.4 GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores at 1.8 GHz. The chip also features a Mali-G71 MP8 GPU.
The base model comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. There is also a variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The smartphone supports two SIM cards, but the second SIM card slot is also used for a microSD card. And if you use two SIM cards, please note that when installed in the second slot, the SIM card only works with 2G and 3G.
In terms of benchmarks, the Honor 9 (with 6GB RAM) scored 1868 in the Geekbench single-core performance test and 6392 in the multi-core performance test. As you'd expect, these scores are on par with the Mate 9 and P10. In AnTuTu Honor 9 scored 142406, and in Epic Citadel in ultra high quality mode the device shows 59.0 frames per second.
The overall performance numbers of the Honor 9 show that it is fast and its scores are comparable to other flagships.
The fingerprint sensor on the Honor 9 is very good. The big difference from the Honor 8 is that the scanner is now located on the front under the capacitive key, which is similar to the style of the Huawei P10. With the help of a biometric sensor, you can wake up your device by simply placing your finger on the home button. The smartphone will wake up and be unlocked in one quick movement.
On the audio side, there are several additional 3D sound profiles when listening to music through headphones. Select the type of headphones used and the audio mode: near, front or wide (near, front or wide), this will help recreate the effect of listening to music in traditional headphones, a home theater or in a concert hall.
Honor 9 is equipped with one speaker that is loud enough and has adequate sound quality. According to Honor, it was fine-tuned by Grammy Award-winning sound designer Rainer Mayer, but that's hard to prove or disprove! Although the speaker produces a very loud sound, the best playback quality is achieved not at maximum volume, but when adjusting it one or two notches less.
Honor 9 has a non-removable 3200 mAh battery, which should last for a whole day. For a mixed activity that includes surfing the Internet, watching videos, and playing 3D games, you'll get about 5 hours of screen time. For one less power-intensive task, such as web browsing or just video, this time can increase to 8 hours. However, if you play a lot of 3D games, the battery life will drop to 4 hours.
If the battery charge is low and there is no way to recharge, then it is suggested to use one of two energy saving modes. The first limits active background apps, disables automatic email syncing, and reduces visual effects. Another “ultra power saving” mode is more radical and, in fact, turns the smartphone into a regular phone with limited functionality: making and receiving calls, sending text messages.
To charge the Honor 9 battery, a 2A charger is used. Charging from 4% to 100% takes 1 hour 54 minutes, with the last 32 minutes charging the remaining 10% (90% to 100%). Up to 50% (from 4%) takes 45 minutes.
Which Honor and Huawei smartphones have an IR port?
Before figuring out how to enable the infrared port on Honor and Huawei, you need to make sure that it is present on the smartphone. To do this, it is recommended to read the instructions describing the main characteristics of the device that were included with the phone equipment. But usually the sensor is built into the following models:
- Honor 3, 6, 7C, 8 Pro, 9 (including lite), 10 (including View);
- Huawei Mate 9 and 20, P9 Plus.

Display
Honor 9 has a 5.15″ display with Full HD resolution (1920 × 1080) and a decent pixel density of 428 pixels per inch. According to the test conducted, the screen has a brightness of 454 nits, which means that the display is bright enough for indoor and outdoor use.
However, with a brightness of less than 500 nits, I was concerned that the smartphone might have difficulty reading in direct sunlight. However, in the display settings, I found the option “Increase readability in sunlight,” which means that the device supports Assertive Display technology. Thus, the smartphone matches tones in real time to improve visibility in bright light. This means that the color of individual pixels is adjusted without increasing the brightness of the entire display. In the Settings menu you can adjust the color temperature of the screen, you can make warmer or cooler tones as you wish, but in my opinion, the default mode is quite good.
The only downside to the Honor 9's display is the lack of tempered glass protection; for this you need to purchase Huawei P10 or Mate 9.
Overall, the display is sharp and colorful, and while it's not as classy as the ones on the Mate 9 and P10, it's great for its price point.
Where to find and how to set up an infrared port on Honor and Huawei?
To take advantage of the new function of the phone and use it as a remote control, just activate the sensor and select the control mode for household appliances (set the meaning of various buttons and the appearance of the control panel). In addition, sometimes you need to install a special application to use the service.

Appearance
There is nothing new in the design: a metal frame, glass front and back. But it looks very cool. I got the blue color - beautiful. There is also silver and black. Judging by the photos, they are also cute.

From a design point of view, I have nothing to dig into: everything is in its place. The lock and volume buttons are at a comfortable height, and the fingerprint scanner is on the front rather than the back. Both glasses are Gorilla Glass 3. I've had scratches on all tempered glasses, and this is no exception.
The device is extremely slippery. Be careful with him.
This is the most restless phone I've ever owned. It’s as if he’s hunting for any slope, noticing even the smallest of them. I once put Honor 9 on a seemingly level table, but it still moved a little.
Instant fingerprint scanner
I put my finger on it and the phone unlocked. Right here. Right now, right away, I'm serious. Our editor-in-chief Kostya Gagarin says that the OnePlus 5 scanner is cooler. But I can’t imagine where it would be even more instantaneous.
On the sides of the scanner there are two navigation buttons: “Back” and “Multitasking”. You can swap them, or you can turn them off altogether and transfer the control to the central button. Then a long press will be “Home”, a short press will be “Back”, and a swipe on the button to the right or left will be “Multitasking”. I played around and returned to the three-button option. I'm not ready to hold the button to go back to the home screen yet. Too serious a step.
Why doesn't the IR port work on Honor and Huawei?
Sometimes the described service experiences unexpected failures and stops working. In such cases, users should think about the reasons for what happened and try to eliminate them. I wrote about Huawei’s tactics when creating flagship Honor series smartphones in a preliminary review straight from the event - the company takes its top-end device, presented about six months before the key announcement of the sub-brand, packages it in a new wrapper, slightly (very slightly) changes the characteristics and sells it for a third cheaper. Voila - a ready-made hit! It worked with last year's Honor 8, which grew out of the Huawei P9, and it also works with the Honor 9, the actual result of a restyling of the Huawei P10.
At the same time, Honor 9 inherits its predecessor in style - the Chinese did not fundamentally change the design, so we are dealing with another shiny gadget that shimmers in the light. Except that a key with a fingerprint scanner appeared on the front panel, the dimensions changed slightly, and the back cover received rounded edges - now, unwittingly, designers will run into comparisons with Xiaomi Mi6. Well, this is the most direct competitor for the new Honor; a head-on collision with it cannot be avoided.
The main reasons why Huawei discharges quickly
We are often contacted in the following situations:
- The battery is exhausted. Over time, it loses capacity, which affects the overall performance of the device. The smartphone charges and discharges quickly. It is also possible that it does not charge completely, but up to 70-80-99%. In this case, the battery will need to be replaced. But this version still needs to be confirmed by diagnostics. And purchasing and replacing a new battery is not a problem.
- The battery has visible deformations (swollen, oxidized). In this situation, it will need to be replaced. This happens after prolonged use of the phone or as a result of moisture getting under the case.
- Incorrect firmware version, which unnecessarily consumes energy and distributes it incorrectly between modules. You should read about this on the specialized forums of your phone model.
- Incorrect setup and use of the device. The smartphone does not hold a charge well when you set the display brightness to maximum. It must be optimal. Long-term use of applications also plays a role. Settings for your desktop, notifications, and everything else should always take energy savings into account. Otherwise, the device will discharge and reduce battery capacity very quickly.
The battery also suffers for various reasons (other than its natural aging). The use of low-quality chargers, mechanical damage and water ingress - all this can negatively affect the overall operation of the device. That is why this issue should only be dealt with by an experienced mobile equipment repair technician.

In the previous flagship device of the family, Honor 8, the designers managed to find a special style, their own unique face for the smartphone - albeit at the cost of the fact that the body was easily scratched and stained. But now, when phones are becoming almost indistinguishable from each other, especially in the mid-range and budget segment (flagships still stand out), the advantages of this approach outweigh the disadvantages. This was directly confirmed by the sales of the G8, and indirectly by the fact that Taiwanese HTC chose a similar approach for its new U series. With the same mirror gloss.
The most spectacular Honor 9, blue
Honor 9 is the most direct successor to its ancestor, and this shows in everything. Both the front surface and the back cover are covered with glass, which effectively reflects light and perfectly collects fingerprints. The sides are still made of metal. In fact, a smartphone looks really great only in photographs, on display, and in the first minutes after unpacking; then it is advisable to hide it in the bumper case that comes with the kit and relax. But even in this form, Honor 9 retains its individuality.
There are three color options: blue, gray and black, and the fourth, gold, is currently sold exclusively in China. Perhaps other versions will appear in the future, albeit in limited editions.

Honor 9 is slightly larger, thicker and heavier than the Huawei P10, which is unusual for a “younger” model. Typically, older smartphones, on the contrary, look more solid. This was partly due to the display - here its diagonal is 0.05 inches larger (this is not a typo!). Partially due to design arbitrariness, the devices are technically very similar. For example, the capacity of the batteries used in these smartphones is the same: 3200 mAh.

The “nine” is practically no different in size from Honor 8 and its main competitor, Xiaomi Mi6. It is convenient to use with one hand, it hides perfectly in your pocket - this is a convenient device in all respects. Except for one thing - if you ignore the above remark about the bumper case, then Honor 9 will turn out to be a very slippery smartphone that tends to fly out of your hands and go on a fatal date with the floor or pavement. Unfortunately, the device does not have any fall protection. Recently, only special handsets for travelers or Moto Force series smartphones can boast of this. Also, the new product does not have protection from dust and moisture - this is a little more sad, although it is also typical for the “up to 30 thousand rubles” segment.

The layout of the devices is also identical. Below the screen there is a “Home” key with a built-in fingerprint scanner, on either side of it there are touch-sensitive navigation keys (this allows you to save space on a relatively small, by modern standards, display). Physical power and volume keys, interfaces - everything is in its usual place.

There are no surprises, as Thom Yorke sang - unless the IR port on the top edge may surprise someone, but it came back into use last year and was also included in Honor 8. The camera unit, by the way, does not protrude above body, like its predecessor.
The fingerprint scanner is located in a button on the front panel - on the one hand, hurray, just like in the iPhone. On the other hand, it’s actually less convenient than it was before. The position of our fingers when pressing the button located on the rear panel is much more natural than the one in which we need to touch the front key. The danger of dropping your smartphone increases. However, this is largely a matter of habit.
The scanner is capacitive, works very quickly, but is sensitive to microdamage to the skin of the finger. With it, you can unlock the device, confirm payments (there is NFC and the ability to use Android Pay), control the camera, answer calls and turn off the alarm. It also reacts not only to a simple touch, but also to when the user runs a finger over it - with this movement you can open the notification panel.
The operating system is Android 7.0 Nougat, covered with the EMUI 5.1 shell. There are no “technical” features of the shell here. A special feature of Honor is the greater software integration of the devices into their environment. In particular, Russian Honor 9 out of the box received Yandex search (along with Google), Sberbank application and 2GIS navigation. How valuable it is, decide for yourself.
The shell itself works very quickly and does not cause irritation - Huawei, after a not very successful start with its EMUI, gradually got used to it and is creating an excellent software environment.

Summing up, after 7 days of using the Honor 9 Lite, I’m convinced for the third time how seriously the guys take the production of smartphones. Think for yourself, a large display, but at the same time cool ergonomics, a nice design. Balance between premium and budget materials, high-quality assembly.
Let's move on, the hardware is quite powerful, but the most important thing is the optimization of the software for it. This results in stability and smooth operation of the system, as well as a good indicator of autonomy, despite the small battery capacity. And as a “snack” we have high-quality cameras for this segment and the ability to take portrait photos with a smartphone for little money.
