Xiaomi won't charge - what to do if your phone won't charge

Charger

Let's start, perhaps, with the simplest and most obvious. First, let's check the functionality of the charging kit. Since it consists of two parts: a cable and a power supply. You need to make sure that each one is working individually.

The most common cause is a broken cord, especially at the connector attachment point. There is only one remedy - replace the cable with a new one.

Attention! If you have already replaced the cord and the problem remains, make sure that the new element is original or has the same technical characteristics as the cable from the original package.

The lack of charging from the computer does not always depend on the performance of the cord. For example, an old OS is installed on a PC, possibly Windows XP, and the charge does not pass through - the computer software simply could not recognize the connected device.

Charging problems aren't limited to broken cables. Next in line is the power supply and checking its functionality. To do this, connect it to another cable and try to charge the phone. If the device does not respond, then it is time to change the power supply.

It is worth mentioning that when using a non-original element, charging may not be possible due to technical incompatibility, while the unit itself is fully functional.

Cause of problems

If your Xiaomi phone is not charging, there may be several reasons for this.

  1. Software glitch . First of all, reboot the device, since the cause of the problems may be a simple software glitch. To do this, click on the “Power” button, then select “Restart” from the list that opens.
  2. Debris gets into the charging hole . If you often carry your phone with you (for example, take it to work, to the gym, etc.), then there is a chance that dust, grains of sand, and other debris may have gotten into its USB port. Take a good look at the charging hole for dust. If there is one, thoroughly blow out the USB port (it is recommended to do this with a can of compressed air), then carefully clean the hole with a soft-toothed brush.
  3. Oxidation of USB connector . Most often, smartphones that are used in places with high humidity are susceptible to contact oxidation. In addition, the contacts could have oxidized due to long-term non-use of the device. To solve the problem, you will need a needle and some alcohol. Soak the needle in it and clean the contacts well. Proceed with great care to avoid damaging the charging connector. We also do not recommend applying too much alcohol to the needle.
  4. Charging fault . A malfunction of the charger will be indicated by the red indicator blinking or the light not turning on at all. The problem could be either the USB cable or the power adapter. Connect the cord to another unit and check if the smartphone is charging. Do a similar procedure with the adapter, connecting another cable to it.
  5. Battery problem . As you use it, your smartphone's battery life decreases. For example, if previously a device on a full charge could withstand a day of battery life, but now it can only last a few hours, then the problem lies precisely in the battery. And if there is a physical breakdown, the battery stops charging altogether. To check this, remove the battery from the smartphone and inspect it for leaks, signs of aging, or thickening. If they are, the battery needs to be replaced. If the battery does not have external defects, then it is best to check its performance using a multimeter (this can be found in electronics repair shops).
  6. Damage to smartphone . Charging problems could be caused by mechanical damage to the gadget's hardware. Make sure you haven't dropped/knocked your gadget recently.

Attention! If damaged, the battery may swell. If the same problem occurs with your battery, immediately remove it and replace it with another one for safety reasons.

USB port

There are several reasons:

  1. Debris has entered the slot. This happens when the owner constantly carries a gadget with him. It is enough to clean it with a soft brush or blow it with air under pressure.
  2. The contacts of the USB port have oxidized. This happens when the phone is used in high humidity, for example, in the bathroom. Another reason for oxidation is its rare use. To solve the problem, moisten the needle in alcohol and clean the contacts. Movements should be careful, do not overdo it with liquid.
  3. When the computer does not see the phone via USB, eliminating problems with the software, all that remains is a malfunction of the computer connector or cable. Check the connection on another device.

If the device does not turn on, but the cable is in good condition, it means the connector is loose. A common problem as it is subject to daily use. The only way to help here is to replace the part with a new one at a service center. Or a constant search for a position in which the contact will be stable, but still, sooner or later, you will have to go to the ACC.

Checking components

When a smartphone stops charging, components that fail are often to blame. Every element needs to be checked.

Checking the USB cable

Test your USB cable on another device. This will help you understand where the problem lies, in the phone, cable or charger. In addition, you should do the opposite - use a working cable from another gadget.

Ask a Question

Externally, the cable sheath may appear completely normal, but inside there may be broken wires or a problem with the contacts. This is especially true for non-original products.

Checking the adapter

This method of solving the problem is similar to the previous one. Try using:

  1. Another power supply with similar characteristics;
  2. Another adapter with different characteristics;
  3. USB ports (versions 2.0 and 3.0) of other devices (computer, set-top box, car charger).

Battery check

If the device does not have a removable battery and you do not have experience in repairing equipment, then it is better to skip this method.

Modern batteries last much longer than those of the past, but they still break down and as a result may not charge.

Each battery has its own lifespan, which is expressed in charge or discharge cycles. When the maximum quantity for these indicators is reached, it fails.

To check the performance of the battery, if possible, remove it from the phone and check for smudges, thickening, or signs of aging on the surface. However, the most reliable indicator is to check with a multimeter, which you can find from a phone repair specialist. If the readings are low, you need to buy a new battery.

Battery fault

It is enough to look under the hood of the phone to understand the condition of the battery. In working condition there should be no smudges, signs of heaving or swelling. Are all these signs not observed? Then all that remains is to measure the battery capacity with a multimeter, available at any service center. The fact is that each battery has a certain reserve of charge-discharge cycles, after which the battery can only be replaced.

Important! You should only purchase the original item. Cheap options last 2-3 times less and are unsafe.

Software updates

In rare cases, a firmware or system component update may cause the Xiaomi Mi 5 to not charge properly. This happens extremely rarely, however, such cases have been described in practice.

Try rebooting your phone, if that doesn't help, you'll have to do a factory reset. But before that, make sure that you have a backup copy of your important data in the cloud, or copied to your computer.

Resetting to factory settings helps if the cause was a software failure.

First days of operation

Xiaomi smartphones sometimes do not charge in the first days of use. One of the reasons is that the device is very discharged. Wait a few minutes and the red indicator will light up; it also requires energy, which the battery simply does not have.

Charging hasn't started? Use simple tips:

  • connect only to the original charger;
  • when replacing the charger with an analogue one, check the parameters: 2 amperes and 5 volts;
  • follow the sequence - first connect the cable to the power supply, only then plug it into the outlet;
  • When charging from a PC, insert the cable into the USB on the rear panel. If there are version 3 ports (blue), use them.

In what cases is it better to contact a service center?

In these cases, it is better to immediately take the gadget to the service center for diagnostics:

  1. There is a burning smell from the phone;
  2. Smoke is observed from the smartphone;
  3. Charging stopped after a short circuit or power outage in the house;
  4. Less than 14 days have passed since the purchase (maybe this is a defect, don’t waste your time, just return the device to the seller within two weeks after purchase);
  5. The phone fell into the water and stopped charging;
  6. The battery is more than 3 years old and you have noticed a gradual decrease in the autonomy of the device.
  7. If the advice from the article did not help you and your case is similar to one of those listed, then it is better to contact specialists at the service center.

Battery calibration

Improper charging and discharging of the smartphone leads to the fact that it either charges too slowly or does not accept a charge at all. Another side of this coin is that the battery was charged to 100%, but after looking at the charging icon after 1-2 hours, the owner discovers that the device is again at zero. Calibration helps solve the problem. This is done in several steps:

  1. Discharge the battery until the smartphone turns off on its own.
  2. Remove the battery and wait a couple of minutes.
  3. We insert it back, but do not turn on the device.
  4. Connect the charger to it.
  5. Wait until fully charged.
  6. We repeat the second point.
  7. Immediately after starting, unplug and let stand for another 15 minutes.
  8. Use as usual.

Other troubleshooting options

In addition to the above recommendations, we have collected several tips shared by Xiaomi smartphone owners to solve charging problems:

  • if the gadget does not charge when turned on, try turning it off and connecting it to a power outlet;
  • turn off the GPS module while charging, as it consumes a lot of energy;
  • return the phone to the time when it was charging normally. This action can only be performed if you have previously performed a backup;
  • download an antivirus and run a virus scan. It is possible that malware is interfering with the correct operation of the battery;

  • If the phone charges, but takes a very long time to charge, the firmware may be too heavy for it. In this case, install a simplified version of the shell.

Using "Frog"

When Xiaomi is not charging with a cable, you can use a “frog” - a universal charger that operates from the mains. Suitable for removable batteries only.

How to use:

  1. Remove the battery. If it is not removable, you shouldn’t disassemble the device, it won’t help anyway.
  2. Insert the frog into the battery and tighten it so that the frog contacts are on the plus and minus terminals.
  3. Connect the battery and press TE (test button). If the green color lights up, the actions were carried out correctly.
  4. If the indicator does not light green, then you have two options for the development of events. First, the battery is completely discharged and needs time to recharge; hold the clothespin together with the battery in the outlet for several minutes. The second is incorrect polarity. It needs to be changed. If the CH charge indicator does not blink.

Socket

First of all, make sure that the outlet to which you connect the Xiaomi Mi 5 charger is working and provides current. It will be discouraging to start digging deep into the jungle of technical details of a smartphone, and in practice, the reason for the lack of charging will be a broken or disconnected socket.

Try connecting the charger to another outlet that is definitely working. If nothing happens with Redmi 5, you probably need to look further for the problem.

Reset

If Xiaomi has not yet turned off, you decide to charge it, but the process does not start, then the problem may be hidden in a system failure. In this case, resetting the settings to the original version, or in other words, a hard reset, will help.

In a simple version, you can return to the original appearance in the phone settings. A more complicated method is to perform a rollback using recovery mode. Read in detail how to do this here.

In the store you can find interesting programs to save battery power and identify various system bugs. Free ones to consider include DU Battery Saver or Battery Doctor.

Cable

Many users believe that if a Xiaomi cable is outwardly intact, without noticeable deformations or breaks in the insulation, then it is in good condition. This is not always the case; quite often the defect occurs inside and outside it is absolutely invisible.

Perhaps in some place the wire was often bent and a break occurred inside, or it frayed near the jack that is connected to the charger or phone.

In a word, it doesn’t matter if the Redmi 5 cable looks good on the outside, connect another cable. If you don’t have it at hand, go to the nearest smartphone accessories store that sells them; many of them let you try the functionality without having to purchase.

If the new cable helped and the Xiaomi Mi 5 started charging, it means that the problem lay inside the cable and it needs to be replaced.

What not to do

Let's look at the main mistakes that smartphone owners make:

  • constant use of a car charger;
  • the desire to achieve one hundred percent battery charge;
  • Charging throughout the day or night.

Experts advise following a few simple recommendations to extend the life of the battery and the smartphone itself:

  • maintain an optimal charge level within 40-80%;
  • recharge your phone regularly;
  • Do not expose the device to temperature fluctuations. Do not overheat or overcool;
  • Once every two months, completely discharge the device.

Xiaomi, like any other smartphone, needs to be charged at least once a day. Although battery life can be extended by turning off the Internet, music and navigation, if it is not required, use the phone only for its intended purpose.

Correctly charging your smartphone will significantly extend the life of the battery and the device itself. Incorrect use of the charger or non-original cables reduces the performance of the battery.

The reason is in the software

A critical error can turn the device into a “brick”.

The prerequisites for this are different:

  • Malicious program.
  • Installing TWRP.
  • Abort update.
  • General operating system failure.

There are several options for troubleshooting:

  • Forced reboot.
  • Reset via Recovery (service menu).

To force a reboot, you need to hold down the power key ( for 10-15 seconds ).

If you have not installed a custom service menu, then use a general reset according to the instructions. To a specific version of Recovery.

You can enter the service mode by holding down the power and volume buttons (up). After the reset, the device will reboot on its own. For TWRP, the sequence of actions in the Recovery menu is very different.

The problem with the update is solved by installing a new version with the MIUI shell.

To do this you will have to download 3 files:

  • Shell (MIUI).
  • The operating system itself.
  • Mi Flash (downloader).

If you have no experience in changing the firmware, it is not recommended to do it yourself. An incorrectly launched firmware process can “ finish off ” the gadget. And it will no longer be possible to restore it without the help of a specialist.

Another very common problem in this case.

Mechanical damage

If Xiaomi redmi note 4 does not charge and does not turn on, most often it is:

  • Sharp blows.
  • Water.
  • Overheat.

If the gadget falls, the cable may tear ( replacement only ). The board breaks ( difficult to repair ) or one of the modules is damaged.

If liquid gets in, short circuits begin and the phone stops functioning. If you find signs of a gadget drowning, don’t try:

  • Turn it on.
  • Put it on charge.

Remove water from the top of the housing and contact a workshop. Overheating also sometimes damages Xiaomi. It is usually associated with :

  • Covers with poor thermal conductivity.
  • Excessive load.

When overheating occurs, individual modules most often suffer (as in the case of drowning). These are BGA chips that are placed on the board by soldering.

In the event of peeling, damage can be eliminated by replacing the peeled or burnt chip. Without a soldering station and a qualified technician, the problem cannot be solved, since the failure is mechanical.
