From experience communicating with other people’s devices, I can say that you can often find the contacts.vcf file there - these are contacts that can be imported into the contact list. It's possible that users, while accidentally experimenting with the Contacts app, perform an export and then forget to delete the file.
If the lost contact is of urgent importance and cannot be restored by simply meeting the person and asking for their phone number, you can try to view a statement of your phone number from the telecom operator (in your personal account on the Internet or in the office) and try to match the numbers (names are provided will not), dates and times of calls with the time you communicated with this important contact.
