A little more about Xiaomi phones and the fight against them. Updated

Briefly about the main thing

The short abbreviation contains long words - Software Development Kit (or a set of developer programs). Many people think that any program for software development can be called an SDK, that it is, for example, a Pascal or Delphi compiler. However, just as you can’t judge a book by its cover, you can’t judge a product by its name. An SDK is a set that expands the functionality of a program, game, or set of products; it makes it possible to create your own program, level or add-on, but only using the developments of the original one.

The appearance of MSA in the system.

If on older models the MIUI MSA firmware was downloaded into the system after several upgrades, today the system initially comes with a built-in program. So a Xiaomi smartphone is already purchased with MSA.

The biggest problem that can potentially be associated with MSA is the problem of wasted traffic. The application often sends and receives small files (1-5 KB) from the server, which is not critical, but our mobile operators round up these numbers to 50-150 KB, which is why the traffic consumed increases significantly. If under normal conditions this does not affect the operation of the smartphone in any way, then in roaming such expenses can quickly siphon off money. Although, to be fair, it should be said that the Chinese Android Xiaomi does not send many requests per day, and most often this is directly related to your Internet surfing.

Three pillars of the SDK

An SDK most often consists of three main components. The most important thing is the program itself or a set of libraries that allows you to develop a new product based on an existing one.

The second part is documentation. Moreover, everything is described in it briefly, concisely and simply. It includes a Tutorial (a step-by-step tutorial in the style of “Creating the World in Six Easy Steps”) and a Reference section, which provides a reference section on what can be done with the SDK.

The third piece of the puzzle is the most favorite among those who often use the product - ready-made examples. Moreover, they almost always cover all the features of the development kit. Thanks to their presence, you can often skip any Reference without trying to delve into the software environment. The samples quickly introduce the user to what can be created in the provided software package.

There are people who are too lazy to read even a short Tutorial. And this is not required! Take an example, edit it, adjust it to your criteria - and the new program component is ready.

What it is

Little is known about this program, and even the manufacturer himself practically does not comment on it.

The “Xiaomi Service Framework” system application is designed to control various synchronization services: Mi Cloud, Mi Account, as well as the operation of alerts, for example, on Xiaomi fitness bracelets. Basically o is closely related to the Xiaomi cloud.

The only sensational problem around this utility is the very high energy consumption. But please note that if you frequently use any of the above phone features, high power consumption may not be surprising.

You can find and see the operation of this application as follows:

  • Go to “Settings”;

  • Open the “All Applications” tab;

  • Scroll down a little and you will see the “Xiaomi Service Framework” utility;

Ready.

From simple to complex

After all of the above, the reader may have a question: “SDK - what is it? A set of programs that are of no interest to a real developer and are only needed by users for petty pampering?” We answer: all SDKs can be divided into two groups.

The first includes kits for creating independent games and programs. The best example would be DirectX, without which no Windows computer can work today. However, regular users are only provided with the working components needed to run applications built using this SDK. For programmers, Microsoft provides a free DirectX SDK, which is a component of a more powerful product - the Windows SDK. It contains all the files that are needed to write a new application or computer game: C++ libraries, compilers, multi-page documentation.

Similar solutions include the Android SDK, a software package created for developing applications for smartphones. In this case, you do not need to delve into the intricacies of the accelerometer or sensor; the functions are already added to the kit.

The second group of SDKs is more interesting. These are not OS components, but huge self-contained tools. For example, these include Torque or Unity - full-fledged game engines that include support for the most advanced technologies. However, such solutions differ in that with the help of the tools included in the package, you can create a wonderful game or program without studying programming too deeply - it will be enough to master the basics. Very often, such products use their own scripting languages with simplified functions.

Developer mode on Xiaomi - how to enable it and what it gives

MIUI is a proprietary shell from Xiaomi, which is installed on top of Android on most of the company's smartphones and has increased functionality compared to bare Android. But even the functionality of MIUI can be expanded even further in the developer settings. Read our article for details.

What is Developer Mode anyway?

In fact, developer mode is available on almost any smartphone running the Android operating system - at least devices running “pure” Android make it possible to “touch” the settings sections hidden in the system. As the name suggests, developer mode is designed mainly to perform narrowly focused actions or enable experimental or not entirely stable device functions - usually this functionality may be needed specifically by game and application developers.

However, this does not mean that the developer mode does not have settings that would be useful to the average user. One of these opportunities is testing firmware functions that are not yet fully ready, but work quite stably.

What can you do with developer mode?

Perhaps the main advantage of using developer mode is the inclusion of USB Debugging, which removes some restrictions in working with a smartphone. First of all, granting Setback permission allows you to install specialized applications, mainly for diagnostics of your device. You will also be able to install some hacked applications (we do not approve of installing such applications), update the firmware through specialized software, and further optimize the operation of your smartphone.

In addition, developer mode allows you to change some essential elements of the system interface. For example, you can change the animation speed: make it slower for a smooth effect when moving from application to application or within the device settings, or, conversely, speed it up to visually speed up the operation of the smartphone itself.

The previous use case is far from the only one; other “secret” settings may provide additional important functions. As always, it all depends on your requests and specific tasks.

How to get into the Developer Mode settings?

Like all manipulations with a smartphone, enabling developer mode involves using the general Settings of the smartphone. On the desktop we find the gear icon and go to Settings. You don’t have to go far - the first item in the list of settings will be the “About phone” section, tap on it.

Inside we will find a list of brief information about your device. You will need to click on the “MIUI Version” item 7 times in a row. While pressing, you will not go to any points, but the line itself will “wink.” You need to press quickly so that the smartphone realizes that you are performing certain manipulations to enter developer mode. After you click on “MIUI Version” 7 times, the message “You have become a developer” will appear at the bottom.

That's it, now you just need to find this section. It's very easy to do. Go back to the main screen of your smartphone Settings, scroll down and find the “Advanced Settings” section. A list will open in which one of the items will be the “For Developers” section.

There is so much here... Where to click, what is it?

For your convenience, we list all sections of the developer mode. Xiaomi programmers divided all settings into eight groups: general, debugging, network and connections, input settings, rendering, rendering acceleration, multimedia, monitoring, applications. Let us note right away that this division still remains conditional - both the names of the items and their content may vary depending on the version of Android and the device you use.

In the “General” group you can find a service that starts the bootloader unlocking procedure - a restriction that prevents an ordinary user from changing the software on his device. This service is called "OEM/Factory Unlock". Also, many will be interested in the “Do not turn off the screen” option - if you need your device not to go into locking mode in any case, this feature will come in handy for you.

We talked about the USB debugging section - the section is really convenient and offers a large number of different actions with that same debugging.

The “Network and Connections” settings group will contain more in-depth network settings. We are talking about both mobile communications and any wireless modules. Inside you will be able to find options such as “Always turn on searching for Wi-Fi networks”, “Do not turn off mobile Internet”, as well as a very convenient setting of the Audio Codec you need for transmission via Bluetooth.

In the “Input Settings” section there are two settings: “Show touches” (your touches on the device screen will be highlighted) and “Pointer location” (the smartphone will record your finger movements on the screen).

The Rendering section will provide the option to speed up or speed up the transition animation speed.

In the “Hardware acceleration of rendering” item you can configure some elements of the graphical interface. So, you can enable an effect called “4x MSAA for OpenGL ES0”, which in theory should smooth out images that overlap each other. There is also a setting for people with visual impairments - simulating an anomaly, which will allow you to slightly correct the colors for more comfortable viewing of the content.

In "Multimedia" the user will be able to disable audio transmission via USB if he does not need this option.

In the “Monitoring” section, the user will find the “Profile GPU rendering” item, when enabled, a graph of processor load will appear on the device screen.

Finally, in the last paragraph, “Applications”, the owner of the device will be able to carry out several manipulations that greatly simplify the use of smartphones. For example, the user will be able to enter a Limit for background processes - especially important for weak devices. Or disable MIUI Optimization, which, by the way, prevents many Xiaomi smartphones with AMOLED displays from allowing the Always-on-Display function to work fully.

As we can see, there are plenty of mode options for developers. The main thing is to be sure to carefully study the instructions before performing all manipulations so as not to disrupt the normal operation of your smartphone.

The latest version is not always the best

Typically, an SDK that is just coming off the production line contains not only new sets of tools, but also a large number of errors and bugs. For example, the latest release of the Java SDK has the number eight in its title. However, many are in no hurry to update their software. They remain faithful to SDK version 7.

To make catching bugs and fixing errors as simple as possible, developers create a website on which the community, an association of developers and SDK users, is conveniently located. Different companies organize communication in different ways, but often there is a forum on the site. Users and programmers share information about found defects on it, discuss the intricacies of working in the SDK, consult and ask questions to technical support staff.

Free cheese only in a mousetrap?

It happens that developers create a newsletter in which they inform everyone about the development of their tools and new versions. On the forum you can almost always find a thread with detailed documentation, which is constantly updated and supplemented. Add to this the articles by the SDK authors, their communication with ordinary community members and the round-the-clock work of technical support staff, and it immediately becomes clear that the community is not a community of free SDK testers, that this is an attempt to make the product better and of higher quality.
