Huawei P10 Lite – Review of the very slippery youngest of the older ones

Autonomy

The gadget's battery capacity is 3000 mAh, and this is not very good.
Of course, the model is compact and the screen does not consume too much energy, but I would like to see something from 4000 mAh and higher, like competitors from Xiaomi. If we translate the numbers into actual use experience, then one charge will be enough for about a day of using the smartphone. Tests indicate the ability to watch videos in HD quality for more than 7 hours straight or continuously play games for 4-5 hours, but it should be understood that the test numbers, as usual, are a little overestimated. Therefore, we do not recommend overloading your smartphone too much, otherwise you will have to constantly look for an outlet.

How power (W) affects charging speed

The power (Watt or W) of the adapter is equal to the product of the current (Ampere or A) and the voltage (Volt or V) - these characteristics are indicated on any power supply. For example, if the adapter has 5 V and 2 A, then its power is 5 × 2 = 10 W.

The greater the power, the faster the charging occurs - it is the increase in power that all developers of high-speed charging are puzzled by. If we ignore the statements of marketers, at the moment only those gadgets that support a power supply of at least 15 W can be considered devices with fast charging (at least, I adhere to this minimum threshold).

Appearance and ergonomics

If we consider the design of the Huawei P10 Lite, the device is more reminiscent of the recent Honor 8 than it is similar to its predecessor. The Chinese manufacturer decided to equip the new product with a main camera with one module. The smartphone has protective glass on both sides. At the same time, the corners of the case are neatly rounded to make using the phone as comfortable as possible. There is also a square fingerprint scanner on the back, and all the buttons on the front are virtual.

A 3000 mAh battery is hidden under the non-separable design. Dimensions of P10 Lite: thickness - 7.2 mm, width - 72 mm, height - 146.5 mm, weight - 146 g.

Fast charging from Qualcomm - Quick Charge (QQC)

Qualcomm has been developing its Quick Charge technology for quite a long time - since 2013. Perhaps that is why it is now one of the most common. Over seven years, developers have presented several updates to their standard. The very first version, QQC 1.0, supports only 10 W of power, so I do not take it into account in this article.

Smartphones supporting Quick Charge 2.0 (QQC 2.0) fast charging

The Quick Charge 2.0 standard supports several voltage values: 5, 9, 12 or 20 V with a current of up to 2 A. The maximum power is 18 W, which was a real breakthrough at the time of the release of this standard.

Smartphones supporting Quick Charge 4 (QQC 4.0) fast charging

Quick Charge 4 technology is compatible with the Power Delivery standard, thanks to which it now supports new profiles for 5 V / 3 A and 9 V / 3 A. Thus, its maximum supported power has increased to 27 W. The “proprietary” voltage range of 3.6–20 V in 0.2 V steps from QQC 3.0 has been preserved.

Hardware and performance

Inside the P10 Lite there is a processor with eight cores Kirin 658, which can operate at a maximum frequency of 2100 MHz. It is worth highlighting the presence of 64 GB of internal memory, expandable using MicroSD cards (up to 256 GB); there are also versions with 32 GB. The smartphone was not deprived of RAM in the amount of 3 or 4 GB.

It is very important that Huawei P10 Lite runs Android 7.0, the latest version of the operating system from Google. There is also a beautiful proprietary shell EMUI 8.0, which has received many interesting innovations.

Screen

The display of Huawei P10 Lite left a positive impression. This is a 5.2-inch screen with FHD resolution, made using IPS LCD technology. The screen is larger than average by 2021 standards.

The screen is quite bright (the backlight is enough in bright sunlight) and very contrasty, which is not typical for phones in this price niche. Color rendition is close to the reference, viewing angles are maximum.

The only thing I can complain about is the high minimum brightness, which can cause discomorphism for the eyes at night. The problem is partially solved by enabling the Eye Protection function, which removes excess ultraviolet radiation and makes viewing the screen more comfortable.

I also can’t help but praise the oleophobic coating of the Huawei P10 Lite screen. The grease-repellent layer effectively removes fingerprints and other dirt. Not all flagship smartphones have such “oleophobia”.

Camera

This Huawei P10 Lite review point can be completely copied from the Huawei Nova and Honor 8 Lite reviews:

“The main camera of Honor 8 Lite is built on a 12 MP Sony IMX286 sensor, like the Huawei Nova. Such sensors can be found in dual cameras of Huawei P9 or Honor 8. Lens with aperture F/2.2, pixel size 1.25 microns, phase autofocus.”

I did not notice any real differences from the cameras of the devices indicated above. Except that the shooting process has become more efficient, the camera application is less slow than on Honor'e 8 Lite. The slightly more powerful P10 Lite chipset and the optimization of EMUI 5.1 have an effect.

The shooting quality is average for 2021; in the right hands, the phone is capable of decent photos. The main thing is not to demand too much from it when shooting at night.

Look at examples of photos taken with the main camera.

The Huawei P10 Lite camera app is simpler than premium smartphones with Leica cameras. The appearance and features are exactly the same as Honor 8 Pro, Honor 8, Honor 8 Lite, etc.

The front camera with a resolution of 8 megapixels takes mediocre pictures; you don’t particularly want to take selfies with it. A common problem with most “average” smartphones on the market.
