Why is it hard to hear your voice on the phone?
If your friend’s voice is practically inaudible from the mobile speakers, the culprit may be one of three parties: your phone, the phone of the interlocutor and the cellular operator. The reasons can also lie in the basic settings of the mobile phone, or they can be more serious: speaker failure. Since the advent of cellular communications, the process of “catching” a signal has not lost its relevance today. In many villages and areas remote from cell towers, subscribers still have to search for the best conditions for making calls.
The main problem is faulty or poorly maintained speakers of mobile devices. Almost any phone model protects the sound of the device being played with a special mesh. And it often becomes clogged with dust, debris from our pockets and other impurities. Cleaning them will help strengthen the interlocutor's voice if the muffling is minor. If there is no sound coming out of the speakers at all, then it’s time to take your cell phone to the nearest service center for repair. But don’t rush to send the device in for repair just yet. Our recommendations should help even in difficult situations.
Weak sound in the speaker or why did the iPhone become quiet?
Hello! Just the other day, some strange nonsense started happening to my iPhone. It consisted in the fact that the sound from the speakers - regular and conversational - suddenly became quiet. And if you can somehow live with the main speaker that doesn’t work well (nobody canceled the vibration), then the fact that it’s very difficult to hear the interlocutor during a call is a complete problem. And I really was about to go to the service, but before that I decided to tinker with it myself... As a result, the author tried a lot of methods and one of them still helped. Victory!:)
To celebrate, we decided to help everyone who encountered quiet sound from the speakers on their iPhone and collect all the tips for eliminating this problem in this article.
As they say, we will always make it to the service in time, first we will try to fix it ourselves. Go!
At first I wanted to separate the tips for each of the speakers specifically, but then I realized that they are almost identical. Therefore, do not blame us - all possible solutions will be presented in the form of a general list.
And here is the list:
- Let's start with the simplest, but you never know... check if the volume level is at maximum? The buttons on the side of the device will help you change the volume.
- Reboot your phone.
- There is another very strange, but at the same time frequently encountered situation. Immediately after purchasing an iPhone, people sometimes complain about the quiet sound during calls. The whole problem is in the shipping film, which is glued to the phone right at the factory. Since the iPhone is an expensive device, some people do not remove the film - thus trying to preserve its appearance longer. Naturally, because of this, the speaker is blocked and the sound does not completely reach your ear.
- We continue about accessories and the next in line are cases. If they are on, it is recommended to remove them and check without them. Some part of the cover or bumper can easily block the lower speaker and thereby muffle the sound.
- It is quite possible that the mesh that covers the speaker membrane is clogged. In this case, you can try to clean it (alcohol, a toothbrush, cotton wool and some non-sharp object will help you) or blow it out, just remember to be careful and careful during this entire process. True, there may be another problem lurking here; you can clean the outside, but dirt accumulates on the inside. You may have to disassemble the phone.
- Try inserting and removing the headphones. Judging by messages on forums, some users are helped by just such a simple action.
- If moisture gets in and corrosion forms, the sound may also be muffled or even absent altogether. What should I do? We read about water and iPhone here, about complete silence - here.
By the way, an important point.
It is necessary to remember that there is only one bottom speaker - it is located on the right.
If a quiet sound comes from the left, then it is:
- At the very least, a very strange phenomenon.
- At the very least, you are the owner of a completely unique device.
However, let's return to what helped the author of this blog. And... in the end, my situation was resolved very simply.
It was all due to some kind of software glitch, which I personally attribute to the use of beta firmware.
It was enough to do a restore and that’s it - the sound became loud again. Yes, it took a little time, but... it’s better than walking around with a quiet iPhone :)
I hope one of the listed methods will still help you and you won’t have to go to the service center.
However, it may happen that this cannot be avoided.
Fortunately, there is good news (of course, if in this case it can be good at all) - such repairs will cost relatively little. And they will do it quickly. Replacing speakers is a simple operation.

Determining the Causes of a Quiet Sound
To take action and fix the problem, you must first determine the source of the problem.
Problem | Action |
If you have trouble hearing your voice with a certain caller | Try calling someone else. He may be the only one whose speech you can barely understand. And in this case, you have nothing to eliminate. The problem is either in his phone or in the cellular operator whose services he uses. Contact him in another way and notify your friend that the problem is on his side. |
If you have difficulty understanding the speech of all the subscribers you are trying to call | First you need to restart your mobile device. To do this, there is a special button on the top or side of the case. It must be pressed and held until the shutdown confirmation window appears. |
Try adjusting the sound not only using the buttons on the phone body, but also optionally.
To do this, go to settings and select “Sound” or “Sound Profiles”.

Special Applications
If the previous sound settings options do not suit you, then use specialized applications. To download the program to your Android device, use Google Play Market.

How to clean your smartphone speakers
Mobile devices from different manufacturers often have multiple speakers. Some for playing sound during speakerphone and music. Others are for outputting sound during a conversation in normal mode. The latter is located at the top on the front side of the mobile device case.
Speaker for outputting the interlocutor's voice in a smartphone
Just in the place that we habitually apply to our ear. The mesh of this speaker needs to be cleaned if you have difficulty hearing your interlocutor on your phone.
Before doing this, you should turn off your smartphone. To clean, you will need a regular toothbrush, which is found in every home.
Only after using it will you need to buy a new one. Or use the old one, which has already served its purpose. It is necessary to pay attention to the principle of intersection of the mesh bars in order to more effectively remove all debris. It is also better to turn the smartphone face down and raise it above your head so that you can see where to place the brush head.
If you follow this advice, debris and dirt will not get inside your phone. Where they can cause even more harm. All unnecessary elements, coming off the mesh, will fall down to the floor. You can complete the cleaning session with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol. You should also clean it with a stick: turning the phone face down and lifting it above your head.
For these purposes, non-standard, but no less effective means are often used. For example, a cream to eliminate blackheads on the face. The principle of their work is better known to women. It is necessary to spread a thin layer on the area with the mesh and wait until the cream hardens. After this, tear off the elastic mask. And with it you will remove almost all the dirt from the speaker mesh.
Calibrating the speaker volume
This step-by-step instruction is exactly correct for xiaomi phones; for phones of other brands (Samsung, LG, Nokia) you need to proceed in a similar way.
So, to calibrate the volume level of the speaker you need:
- Go to the settings section, then tap on all parameters.
- In the list we find the item “edra version” and tap on it 5 times.
- In the upper right corner of the engineering menu that appears, click on the 3 dots, and then select additional settings Additional Tools.
- In the next menu we find item 10 “Calibrate speaker PA” and tap on it.
- All calibration has begun and we hear speaker noises of varying volumes.
- The speaker calibrated quickly enough and we were shown the current speaker settings.
This completes the calibration and solves the problem.
Increasing volume in the Android engineering menu
This method is suitable for most mobile phones with Android OS. Not all users know that this operating system has an engineering menu that makes it possible to change inaccessible settings. Getting into it turns out to be not so difficult. You need to unlock the screen and enter the following numbers without entering anywhere: *#*#3646633#*#*.
The combination must be entered without spaces.
After entering the last character, the smartphone will open a previously unseen menu for you:
- Depending on the model and manufacturer, the engineering menu may look different. You need to find the “Audio” item;
- Then select "LoudSpeaker Mode";
- In this menu, scroll down the screen if necessary to find the “Max. Vol." with a numeric value. This can be set to 140, 148 or something else;
- You need to manually enter 160. This is the maximum value of the smartphone's ear speaker. Finally, click the “Set” button next to the number.
Now exit this menu, restart your device and try calling your loved ones. Or a subscriber with whom the sound from the smartphone speaker was quiet during a conversation. If the provided code is not suitable for entering the menu, try to determine it for your model by creating a request in Google or Yandex search engines. There are also special utilities that help open unusual menus. But most of them require root rights. Having which you can increase the volume of the speakers without utilities.
To get root rights, you need to read the instructions. Which also need to be found through a search. A few years ago, this procedure scared many Android smartphone owners. Today, phone hacking is easier. And you will need a minimum of effort and knowledge to become an Android superuser.
In the phone settings
The fastest and most convenient method to increase the sound level is to change its parameters in the settings of your mobile gadget. This method will also be useful if the volume rocker on the device is broken.
The procedure is as follows:
- Go to the “Settings” section.
- Go to the “Sound and Vibration” tab (called “Sounds” on some versions of Android).
- In the window that appears, you can use sliders to adjust the volume of each effect: ringtone, alarm clock and multimedia files.
Sound settings in a Samsung phone
In the same menu, you can change other audio characteristics, for example, activate silent mode or reduce the volume of keystrokes.
My Samsung A5 even has an equalizer with advanced settings
What to do if you can’t hear your interlocutor on an iOS smartphone
iOS mobile devices also have a little-known feature that allows you to hear your interlocutor better.
To find it, do the following:
- Open your device settings;
- Select “Basic”;
- Then click "Accessibility";
- Find “AssistiveTouch” here and select it;
- On the next screen, activate this item with a special slider;
- A gray square with a transparent round button inside will appear on the screen. You need to dial the number of any subscriber and press it, since the functions we need appear only when there is an active call;
- A menu will appear where you need to select “Device”;
- By operating the knob on the next screen, you need to increase the volume as much as possible.
Standard settings
A quick way to figure out how to control speaker volume is to use the default phone settings.
Procedure on an Android device:
- Go to the “Settings” menu on your device, find the “Sounds” section.
- In the window that opens, you can adjust the volume of the ringtone, alarm clock, etc.
- To increase the volume, drag the slider to the right, to decrease it, drag it to the left.
- In the same window there is a function to mute the sound, change the ringtone and other audio parameters.
How to clean the top speaker from dust and dirt
- The first thing you need to do is use a vacuum cleaner in the area of the earpiece grille. Do not press on it or touch the plastic to the display. You will achieve maximum effect if you use a narrow brush with a bristle attachment. After this, most of the dust should disappear, but that's not all.
- Take a toothbrush and clean the earpiece mesh. It is advisable to use one with pointed bristles so that they penetrate the holes better.
- Now comes the turn of alcohol and cotton swabs. Dip the stick into the liquid and, pressing lightly on it, wipe the speaker. Try not to wet the cotton wool too much, just dip it lightly in alcohol. Let the speaker dry for three minutes.
- If you have a magnifying glass or loupe, consider the speaker. If the above steps are followed correctly, it should be completely clean. If there is still dirt left, we move on to the last operation.
- Here we need masking tape. If you don’t have one at your disposal, a regular one will do. The only thing worth paying attention to is that the sticky layer does not separate and remain on the surface of the screen. Please note that the tape will only help if the speaker grille is flush with the screen. All you need to do is stick the tape with the sticky side and iron it tightly in the area of the speaker mesh. For a targeted effect, you can press it much inside the speaker with a regular cotton swab.
- After completing the manipulations, check the speaker. If, after cleaning it yourself, it still works quietly, there is nothing left to do but go to a service center. It's likely that the problem is something else.
Now you know what to do if your phone speaker wheezes. Did the procedure help you or not? Tell us in the comments and share your ways to solve this problem.
