Autonomy
As mentioned earlier, due to the small battery capacity, only 215 mAh, Honor Magic Watch 2 42 mm cannot boast of record autonomy.
The manufacturer claims 7 days of continuous operation and this is absolutely true. However, this result can be achieved by losing important functions. To charge the watch, a proprietary “tablet” is used; it is tightly held by magnets and does not jump off under slight external influence. It takes 1.5 hours to fully replenish the battery.
Operating system and software
The system in Honor Magic Watch 2 has not changed compared to what we know from analogues from Huawei. It's a closed operating system that doesn't allow you to install any options other than watch faces. All interaction between the gadget and the phone is carried out using the Health application. If we connect Magic Watch 2 to a non-Honor or Huawei smartphone, we must additionally install Huawei Mobile Services software, which takes up 173 MB.
I tested the Honor Magic Watch 2 with an LG V40 phone and did not experience any issues with any of the features. Controlling and displaying song title, playing and pausing, adjusting volume or changing tracks on the LG phone for each application, and even the text-to-speech function for PDA applications worked flawlessly. However, the camera shutter cannot be released using this watch.
The capabilities and limitations of the system remain unchanged - you can display the contents of messages from notifications, but there is no way to interact, even the simplest. You cannot mark an email as read or delete it. Reply to a message from Messenger or Viber. It is impossible to dictate any text from the watch level - the microphone is used only for voice conversations.
The second Honor Watch also lacks any form of navigation - be it by waypoints, on a map or in the form of GPS coordinates. It is difficult to justify this shortcoming. However, I had no problems with notifications. Every app that was given permission to bother my wrist did so immediately.
The biggest new feature is the Honor Magic Watch 2, which features a set of aesthetically pleasing, easy-to-read and practical digital watch faces that offer what sports-focused smartwatches were designed to do - communicate useful things in a clear way. In previous models, analog and digital dials were not of the best quality, and there were few of them. In the case of Magic Watch 2, everything is more aesthetically pleasing and thoughtful!
There is also a new option to create your own screensavers displayed on the display, for which we can use any photo or image, even downloaded from the Internet. If someone wants to put a portrait of their pet, they finally have the opportunity.
Battery and operating time
Since my main watch was MagicWatch 2 46 mm, we will talk about them. For 42 mm, the indicators can be safely divided by two, the battery is smaller there.
The watch is powered by the Kirin A1 chipset, built on power-efficient Cortex-M7 cores that consume 10 mA/MHz, which is significantly lower than the industry average of 30 mA/MHz. This allows the 46mm watch to last up to 14 days on a single charge under typical usage scenarios and up to 30 hours with the GPS tracker on continuously.
The watch has a constant time display mode, which consumes energy. In this case, the watch functions in a typical scenario for about a week. This is an excellent working time, it is difficult to complain about it in any way.
The watch is charged from the adapter familiar from the previous generation, equipped with a magnetic holder (this is not wireless charging, so it’s better not to lose the adapter and take it with you everywhere). Full charging time is one and a half hours.
Appearance
If only one word had to be used to describe the design of the Honor Magic Watch 2 42 mm, it would be elegance. The watch case is made of high-quality 316L stainless steel, and the entire front part is covered with 2.5D glass. There are no unnecessary inscriptions or distracting colored inserts or numbers.
There are two buttons on the right side, the top one is responsible for the application menu, the bottom one is customizable, you can assign any function to it, the standard press opens workouts. Depending on the selected menu, the buttons may have other options, for example, adding or decreasing the volume in the player.
The lower part of the case is made of high-quality black plastic. There are also four sensors (2 infrared and 2 optical), 2 magnetic contacts for charging and a small hole for a digital barometer.
There are no complaints about the build quality; the design is solid and reliable. The watch is IP68 protected, which means it is completely dustproof and waterproof. Honor Magic Watch 2 42 mm is suitable for swimming in the pool and open water.
The strap is made of elastomer, the hand under it does not sweat, there is no irritation or discomfort. However, if the need arises, thanks to the standard 20 mm mount, it can be easily replaced with any other.
Traditionally, watch manufacturers consider the smaller version to be a more feminine option, and as a result, the straps for such models are made a little shorter. In the case of Honor Magic Watch 2 42 mm, the total length is 24 cm. On not the largest male hand, you have to use the outer holes.
Honor Magic Watch 2 42 mm is equipped with a 1.2-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 390 x 390 pixels (326 ppi). The oleophobic coating is of high quality, your finger glides over it like a hockey player on ice, and it’s also quite difficult to get the screen dirty. The stroboscopic effect is not noticeable to the eye, but the camera catches it.
The maximum brightness is at a very high level, even the burning summer sun cannot prevent notifications from being read. Overall, the natural black color, brightness, pixel density and colorful interface design create an excellent visual experience.
And even when the watch goes into sleep mode, it does not lose its aesthetics and main function. This happens due to the Always on Display mode. In the settings, you can choose from 6 watch faces or completely disable this feature to save energy.
Of course, it is possible to change the design of the main screen. In the “Health” application, the number of watch faces is measured in dozens, and more and more new variations of both arrow and digital themes are constantly being released. For those for whom this is not enough, there are special tools for creating your own options and catalogs of hundreds of options from fans of this device.
How to use Honor Watch Magic?
Now let's talk in detail about managing smart watches. Honor Watch Magic works quickly and smartly, no freezes or slowdowns were noticed. The display is convenient to use - it is quite responsive and pleasant to the touch, the animation is smooth.
As mentioned above, there are two buttons. The top one opens an impressive list of all available functions.
- Workouts - list of available workouts.
- Records—a record of the user’s workouts.
- Pulse - measure heart rate in real time (with the option active in the Health application). By swiping up you can open the second section with heart rate zones (extreme, anaerobic, warm-up, etc.).
- Activity - a screen with user activity statistics. The number of steps, minutes of exercise, and the number of times the user got up from a chair are displayed. The second display includes information about calories burned, distance traveled, steps taken, and total exercise time.
- Sleep—displays the time of your last sleep.
- Barometer - shows atmospheric pressure, only in hectopascals. The second screen has an altimeter to measure altitude at sea level.
- Compass - the name speaks for itself, the function works clearly and correctly.
- Weather - Displays the weather for one day in the city selected in the Health app. Not very informative.
- Messages is a log of notifications that come to your smart watch. The 10 most recent entries are stored here.
- Stopwatch and timer.
- Alarm clock - you can set up several full-fledged alarm clocks for different days of the week.
- Flashlight - The clock display lights up in bright white. May be useful in some situations.
- Phone search. The latter will play loud and obnoxiously, so be prepared.
- Settings - a section with screen settings (dial and brightness), Do Not Disturb mode, system functions (shutdown/reset) and general information about the device.
As for the second button, it opens the section of available workouts:
- Running courses.
- Running outside.
- Treadmill.
- Walking outside.
- Climb.
- A ride on the bicycle.
- Exercise bike.
- Swimming in the pool.
- Swimming in a pond.
- Other.
Honor Watch Magic also has a curtain, which can be called up by swiping from top to bottom. This is where you'll find Do Not Disturb, Display Time, Find My Phone, Block, and Settings. Below is the battery charge status, Bluetooth status and current date.
We'll tell you more about the available watch faces. At the time of writing this review, there were 13 of them - for every taste and color. There are options with several additional dials, a main screen in the form of a chart with important statistics, a dial with a heart rate graph, a regular Roman clock and other interesting solutions. It is important to note that one dial design shows maximum information, another shows pulse and blood pressure, and the third shows only the clock.
Note the constant heart rate monitoring, which is activated in the application. The technology allows you to monitor your heart rate around the clock and even notify the user about its high levels (the unit is selected individually).
The measurement accuracy is high, or so it seems. If you look at the statistics, you can see that at night the heart rate is slow and moderate, and during physical activity it increases. We checked the heartbeat next to an electronic tonometer - the results are almost identical.
The Chinese company's own technology, Huawei TruSleep, is responsible for sleep monitoring. According to the developers, it distinguishes 6 types of sleep, but in 2 weeks of testing we saw only “Fast”, “Light” and “Deep” sleep.
Conveniently, each sleep type and other general details are presented in the app for reference. This will help you correctly interpret sleep statistics.
There are no complaints about the operation of the pedometer - this technology is “tested” and reliable, and the errors are minimal. Note that the fitness watch distinguishes between running, walking and lifting.
An important advantage of the gadget is GPS support. This will give the user the opportunity to see the tracks of their runs and cycling trips. To activate this option, you need to select a workout type in the Huawei Health app.
Messages on HonorWatch Magic do not work well. Firstly, only 10 alerts are stored in memory, secondly, only 80 characters are displayed, thirdly, a strange font and inconvenient display. It is convenient to use this function only to find out who a message or letter came from. Notifications about an incoming call on the phone are also flawed - you cannot reset the call or respond with a quick SMS message in the “Busy, I’ll call you back” style. It is not comfortable.
Impression
I like this watch, 46 mm - it is a men's model, which is made in a sports style. There are actually no differences from the same Huawei Watch GT2 Sport, the design and straps are slightly different, but in fact they are the same model. And this is a rare case when they even have the same price.
What smartwatches can you choose from on the market? In the Samsung line, this is the first generation Watch Active, their cost is 16,990 rubles.
More customization options, shorter operating time (1-3 days depending on the mode), small diameter, like the 42 mm MagicWatch 2. In my opinion, these are products of different classes; from a design point of view, the advantage of the Watch Active is noticeable. I don’t consider the new second generation as a competitor, since the cost starts from 25 thousand rubles, for the same reason you don’t have to look at the Apple Watch.
The closest product in spirit is the Amazfit GTR watch; it also runs RTOS, provides similar operating time, and can do, plus or minus, the same things.
But the cost of this watch is about 10-12 thousand rubles in Russia, with a diameter of 47 mm, this is clearly a more advantageous offer than the MagicWatch 2. The question of sports functions remains open; they are better implemented on Honor. But if you don’t need a watch for sports, then this option can be ignored.
More about Huawei: Comparison of Huawei P30 lite and Huawei P40
The Russian price of MagicWatch 2 is 12,990 and 13,990 rubles (42 and 46 mm). This is quite an adequate price, but it does not differ from the price of the same GT2, the cost is similar. Therefore, it is difficult to assume that MagicWatch 2 will become a bestseller, and the competitor in the form of products from Amazfit is very serious; these watches are selling well.
Activity and health tracking
Honor Magic Watch 2 is very suitable for activity monitoring. They measure heart rate, stress, steps, calories, distance and sleep in detailed, continuous measurements. Data is presented as charts or numbers, synchronized with the Health app and can be collected throughout the day, week, month, year. If you're looking for a sports watch that's equally effective at activity monitoring, has long battery life, and doesn't cost too much, you may find that the Honor Magic Watch 2 has little competition.
However, there are significant limitations to keep in mind—data cannot be exported from the Health app to other services like Straw, RunKeeper, Endomondo, Google Fit, Runtastic, or Garmin Connect. As I mentioned earlier, the smart features here are very limited compared to even Samsung's competitors.
The set of tracked disciplines includes 15 exercises, and has not undergone significant changes compared to the latest Huawei smartwatches.
Display
Now in the main display. Let us immediately note that the screen on the gadget is round and located around the entire perimeter - no corners or thick frames, which is often found in budget smartwatches from China.
Honor Watch Magic is equipped with a 1.2-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 390 x 390 pixels and a high pixel density of 326 ppi. Such characteristics provide a bright and clear picture without visible “pixelation”.
Note the AMOLED matrix, which gives the screen contrast and brightness. Another extremely important point is that the watch interface is predominantly made in black. As you know, black color is not illuminated in AMOLED displays, so smart watches manage to save battery power.
The developers have provided a convenient display brightness setting - from 1 to 5, there is also an “Auto” mode. The maximum indicator should be enough in summer in bright sunny weather, but the minimum brightness level at night is blinding.
Clock display
The screen of my Honor Magic Watch 2 has a diagonal of 1.39 inches and an AMOLED matrix. Its resolution is 454×454 and its pixel density is 326 PPI. The same parameters as the model from Huawei.
The display brightness can be set to one of 5 levels, or adjusted automatically. The waiting time can be changed from 10 to 20 seconds or left on automatic mode. You can also specify how long you want the screen to be backlit (ranging from 5 to 20 minutes). It is also possible to configure the display of the dial in standby mode - then the time will always be visible. However, this will affect the battery life.

Positioning
The Honor brand has always been an alternative to similar products from Huawei; models from this brand appear a little later, but at the same time they are more affordable. At the end of November in Beijing, the company showed a whole scattering of products, including an update to smart watches - the MagicWatch 2 model. This is a continuation of the line of accessories from Honor, and the Huawei Watch GT2 can be considered the prototype.
If we abstract from internal competition in the Huawei/Honor line, then there is the Apple Watch on the market today, it dominates in sales. Functional, but completely unlike a watch, a sort of rectangle. In the latest version, they even learned to always show the time, but at the same time, the operating time, as before, does not exceed a day during normal use.
Apple smartwatch buyers tend to exclusively use the iPhone, which is a product for internal use within the company's ecosystem. At the same time, Android users are free to choose any products and use them on devices from different companies; there are no restrictions here; Honor watches can be safely used together with an iPhone.
Unlike smart watches that support the installation of various additional applications, watch faces and similar decorations, Huawei decided that it was better to rely on operating time. As a result, MagicWatch 2 lasts from a week to two on a single charge, but at the same time you get exactly the capabilities that they originally had, and nothing more.
Installing some applications, connecting new watch faces - all this is impossible. This may seem like a serious limitation to some, but many people adequately assess how they will use the device, how much they need it, and that they will not change dials every week or look for some additional software.
In my opinion, this watch competes primarily with popular watches from Amazfit, and also, to some extent, smart watches from Samsung. It sounds paradoxical, but, despite the above, watches from Samsung are still positioned higher, they look like a fashion accessory, while the MagicWatch 2 is primarily functionality, and then something else.
Comparison of 42 and 46 mm versions
Before moving on to the review of Honor Magic Watch 2 42 mm, it is necessary to identify the differences with the 46 mm version.
In addition to appearance, the main difference lies in the dimensions and size of the screen, 1.2" with a resolution of 390x390 for Honor Magic Watch 2 42 mm and 1.39" with a resolution of 454x454 for 46 mm. The battery in the small version is also inferior - 215 mAh versus 455 mAh, respectively.
Of course, because of this, the battery life of the “small” watches is half as long. On top of that, Honor Magic Watch 2 42 mm does not have a speaker and microphone, and therefore, there is no ability to make voice calls, unlike Honor Magic Watch 2 46 mm.
A more detailed review of Honor Magic Watch 2 46 mm is presented in this video.

Pairing
The watch is synchronized with your smartphone using the Huawei Health application. On Huawei or HONOR it is pre-installed; on others it needs to be downloaded from Google Play or the App Store. Otherwise, the model and operating system do not matter - the accessory works with any smartphone without restrictions. Select the desired watch model, and on the accessory, open the “Search for a smartphone” section, then pairing will be performed.
Showing notifications is standard for all smartwatches except the Apple Watch. In the “Messages” section you will see everything that has arrived on your smartphone. The text is displayed in full - click on the desired notification and it will expand.
Notifications are implemented conveniently, but they are incomplete. You won't be able to respond to notifications without a smartphone - the watch does not support either templates, like the Samsung Galaxy Fit bracelet, or the ability to dictate text. Photos are not displayed, however, only Apple Watch can do this.
Added a function to remotely control music on a smartphone. One of the desktop pages is a player. It allows you to: turn on/off a track, select next/previous, adjust the volume. A good replacement for the remote control on your headphones if you don’t have one.
The highlight of Honor Watch Magic 2 is the ability to answer calls. The watch has a built-in speaker and microphone, so you can answer an incoming call even if your smartphone is not nearby.

Huawei Honor Magic Smartphone: Review
Dimensions and design
Honor Magic looks stylish and even magical due to the glass that is strongly curved on the sides and the smooth shape of the body. A similar feature is used by the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, but here the screen is curved not only at the sides, but also at the top and slightly at the bottom. And to such an extent that the ends of the device merge with the glass and this makes the phone look like a bar of soap or a smooth pebble. It's very unusual, but not particularly pretty. What's unusual for a Huawei smartphone is the fingerprint scanner. For the first time, it was not placed on the back, but integrated with the Home key under the display. On the back of the Honor Magic there are dual cameras with flash. The back is almost completely covered with glass, which looks stylish, but it’s not very practical - the body will slide and get dirty quickly.
The stated dimensions of the smartphone are: 146.1x69.9x7.8 mm, weight - 145 grams. It has a thin, but at the same time very tall body. For comparison, the 5.2-inch Huawei P9 weighs the same, but is more compact.
Honor Magic will be available in two colors: black and white.
Screen
Little is known about the Honor Magic screen - it has an atypical diagonal, 5.09 inches, an AMOLED matrix and an extremely high Quad HD resolution (2560x1440 pixels). The pixel density is very high - 577, image clarity is on par with the Samsung Galaxy S7. There is no more information about the display, but knowing about the AMOLED matrix, you can be sure of high image contrast and good readability in the sun.
Camera
Judging by the available information, Honor Magic received almost the same cameras as the Huawei Honor 8 - dual rear ones of 12 MP and a front one of 8 MP. The principle of dual cameras is the same as that of Huawei P9 - one camera is color, and the second is black and white, to improve the quality of photos (especially in low light conditions). Most likely, Honor Magic will shoot at least no worse than Honor 8, which is already good. The only pity is that the chipset used is not capable of shooting 4K video, which means the phone will be left without this flagship attribute.
Communications
Honor Magic has a fairly wide range of wireless communications:
- high-speed and dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac
- LTE support
- Bluetooth 4.2
- NFC chip
- A-GPS with GLONASS support.
There is no information about FM radio yet. The smartphone has two slots for nanoSIM cards, but they work alternately. It is also known that a USB Type C connector is used for charging and connecting to a PC.
Battery
The autonomy of Honor Magic is ensured by a rechargeable battery with a capacity of 2900 mAh. This is a good indicator for the diagonal of a smartphone. For comparison, the 5.5-inch models Asus Zenfone 3 Laser and Huawei Honor 5X have only slightly higher capacity – 3000 mAh. On the one hand, the phone has a fairly powerful chipset, but on the other hand, it has an economical display type. The manufacturer does not announce specific numbers, but you can expect autonomy from the device at the level of Honor 8, that is, about a day of work on one battery charge. But the company announced support for fast charging - up to 40% in 10 minutes and up to 70% in 20 minutes.
Performance
The performance of Honor Magic promises to be quite high. It has 4 GB of RAM, a fairly powerful, although not new, eight-core Hisilicon Kirin 950 chipset (4 cores at 2.3 GHz and 4 cores at 1.8 GHz). The same one was used in Huawei Honor 8, and its speed is fine. Except that the Mali-T880 MP4 graphics chipset is rather weak for Quad HD resolution and will be noticeably inferior to modern flagships in heavy toys.
Memory
The internal memory of Honor Magic is 64 GB. This is quite enough to store photos, music, install games and applications. There is no way to expect the possibility of expanding the memory - the phone does not have a slot for a memory card, which can be called a disadvantage of the model as a whole.
Peculiarities
The Honor Magic smartphone runs Android 6 OS, however, it does not have the usual EMUI interface, instead there will be something new, the “magic” Magic Live interface with artificial intelligence functions. There is no information about updating to Android 7.
Honor Magic has many features: an unusual design with curved 3D glass, an ultra-clear display, a dual camera and a new shell with artificial intelligence functions. The latter includes a number of “smart” features, for example, unlocking the phone with a glance (FaceCode) or predicting the user’s needs (offering recommendations based on the analysis of your messages). The Smart Display feature will proactively display information that is relevant to you. In fact, its implementation is not yet clear; it is possible that the function will only get in the way. In addition, this means that now not only Google, but also Huawei will collect your personal information, for example, about correspondence in instant messengers and social networks. It's interesting that Huawei was the first to introduce a device with built-in artificial intelligence, but its capabilities are not amazing. In addition, it is expected that Samsung will also use artificial intelligence in its flagship Galaxy S8.
Functionality and
Thanks to its own SoC – Kirin A1 and 16 MB of RAM, the watch works quickly. Even if training and music control are turned on, and at this moment a notification arrives, Honor Magic Watch 2 42 mm will display it without visible effort. During the week of testing, there were no bugs or slowdowns, which is not surprising; the shell here is quite simple, without the ability to install additional programs.
*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden}html,body{height:100%}img,svg{position:absolute;width:100%;top:0;bottom:0;margin:auto}svg{ left:calc(50% – 34px)}” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen>
In addition to the above-mentioned heart rate and barometer sensors, the smart watch is equipped with: a GPS module, altimeter, accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer and light brightness sensor. Bluetooth 5.1 is used to connect to smartphones based on IOS and Android. No random disconnects were observed during testing; a break in open space occurs only after 17 meters, which is quite a lot. Thanks to this, Honor Magic Watch 2 has an extensive list of functions, which we’ll move on to.
Productivity and Connectivity
The internal components, like the screen, are almost the same as the Huawei model. The Magic Watch 2 is powered by the Kirin A1 chip, supports Bluetooth 5.1 and detects location using GPS and GLONASS. The device also received 4 GB of internal memory, of which 2.3 GB is available to the user - it can be used for music files played directly from the watch, without the phone. The condition is the use of Bluetooth headphones. Honor Magic Watch 2 does not support any popular music streaming app.
The list of built-in sensors includes: accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetic field, heart rate, illumination and barometer. Two key drawbacks, already known from Huawei watches, are also present here - no WiFi and NFC. WiFi would allow you to receive notifications outside of your phone's Bluetooth range and transfer files faster. NFC - pay with your watch in the store.
conclusions
Honor Magic Watch 2 42 mm focuses on sports functions and maintaining health, which means it will be useful not only as a beautiful accessory, but also as a truly useful gadget.
Advantages:
- Thoughtful and stylish design
- High quality screen
- Fast interface
- Huge number of training modes
- Measuring accuracy
- Standard strap mount
- A large number of interchangeable dials
- Lots of features
Flaws:
- Closed system (no applications can be installed)
- When all available functions are enabled, battery life drops from 7 to 4 days
Design and appearance
The Honor Magic Watch 2 I tested came with a silicone strap. The case and strap are matte black, and the top round button has a red stripe. In my opinion, it perfectly combines classic shapes and a round display with modern sporty design and functions.
Like Watch GT 2, Magic Watch 2 received two control buttons and a touch screen. The top one brings up a list of all available functions and acts as the main one - returning us to the main dial. The lower one allows you to start training without touching the screen, for example, while wearing gloves. You will also be able to assign a shortcut to any function on your Honor smartwatch.
What distinguishes the second version of the Magic Watch from the first is the built-in speaker and microphone. They allow you to conduct telephone conversations, as well as receive audio notifications and play advice from a virtual trainer. Despite the speaker, the watch is waterproof (up to 50 meters). With them you can swim in the pool, there are even special training modes for this. The speakerphone level here is so good that you can easily talk in quite noisy environments. In this regard, the Watch 2 is better than many phones.
The strap has a slightly different shape than the Huawei watch. The name Honor is also embossed on the buckle. It is more comfortable than the first generation version and is durable for long periods of wear, although it is not as suitable for everyday wear as the leather one. Attached in the standard way.
There are two size types of Honor Magic Watch 2: 46mm and 42mm. I tested the larger version. The reviewed model weighs 41 grams, and the smaller one weighs 29 grams. Another important difference is that the smaller version has twice the battery life.
