Huawei p9 update to android 8. Oreo update for Huawei P9

Back in January, Huawei announced an update to a number of its devices to Android 8.0 Oreo with the proprietary EMUI 8.0 shell. And now the Chinese giant has fulfilled its promise. Reportedly, 7 smartphones are already receiving the update to EMUI 8.0.

Important!

At the moment we are talking
exclusively
about firmware for China. There is no word yet on whether there will be official international versions. Of course, enthusiasts will be able to install Chinese ones, but they will have to install Google Play themselves.

What is known

The list of devices looks like this:

  • Huawei Mate 8
  • Huawei P9 Plus
  • Honor 8
  • Honor V8
  • Honor Note 8
  • Honor Play 6X

In other words, the company is updating devices released over the past couple of years. At the same time, the beta version of EMUI 8.0 was released for them back in May. Now the release is ready.

As GizmoChina clarifies, updates will be released every day from July 9 to July 15 at 10:00 (obviously, local developer time). However, only 5,000 units of each model will be among the first to receive the update. This is clearly done so as not to overload the update servers and communication channels.

Android 8.0 for Samsung

Android 8.0 for Samsung smartphones will definitely see the light of day, but many popular gadgets will remain without the latest version. As always, the update will come with a long delay - you can’t expect anything else from the Koreans.

The list of Samsung devices supporting Android 8.0 may look like this:

  • Galaxy S8/S8+.
  • Galaxy S7 / S7 Edge / S7 Active.
  • Galaxy A3/A5/A7 (2017).
  • Galaxy A3 / A5 / A7 / A9 (2016) - unlikely.
  • Galaxy J5/J7/J7 Prime (2017).
  • Galaxy C9/C9 Pro.
  • Galaxy Note 7 Fandom Edition.
  • Galaxy Note 8 (not yet presented).
  • Galaxy Tab S3.

The estimated release date for the update is late 2021 and early 2018.

At the same time, you can be sure that the new flagship phablet Galaxy Note 8, which will be shown at the end of summer 2017, will receive Android 7.0 Nougat, and not G8.

Gadgets like the Galaxy S6, Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy J3/J5 will be left behind as they are either too cheap or their life cycle has already expired.

And what else?

In addition to the models mentioned above, 20 other devices from the company have already been updated to Android 8.0 Oreo. This allows us to hope that the remaining smartphones and tablets (except for the very old ones) will receive updates in due time. It is important to note that updates are not yet available in all regions, so you need to periodically check for a new firmware version using the Firmware Finder application from Team MT.

It has not yet been specified what new features the smartphones will receive. However, most likely it will be the basic features of Android 8.0 Oreo like improved power saving, performance optimizations and modular updates.

In general, we note that Chinese manufacturers are more willing to switch to the “eight” than A-brands. Apparently they believe (quite rightly) that using the latest developments will allow them to remain in service. At the same time, famous companies rely on their long-term reputation.

Android 8.0 Oreo is now officially available to users - its source code has been transferred to the Android Open Source Project. Starting August 21st, Android 8.0 will have a lot of testing ahead of it - testing at the carrier/network level, as well as testing across devices. For manufacturers, this is the start of the testing process to integrate the latest version of Android on their devices.

Google has confirmed that it plans to update or launch Android Oreo on devices from the following manufacturers:

Pixel/Nexus devices

Google began rolling out Android 8.0 as a public beta to some of the latest Pixel and Nexus devices in May 2021, but now the new version of the OS will officially arrive on them. Here they are:

In January 2021, Huawei released an update for the operating system of its Huawei P9 to the latest version of Android - 7.0 Nougat. Along with this update, P9 owners receive an updated EMUI 5.0 user interface. This update is already arriving on smartphones of this model in most regions of the world. Let's talk about what Huawei P9 update to Android 7 is all about.

The update is available over the air. The smartphone itself will inform you about its availability in a corresponding message. You can also find out about its availability on your device if you go to the main system settings menu in the section called “ About phone”

" But before you update Huawei P9 to Android 7, let's find out what it is.

Android 8.0 for Google Pixel and Nexus

Smartphones and one tablet from these lines will definitely receive a stable version of Android 8.0 Oreo, since official beta firmware is available for them. The list of lucky winners looks like this:

  • Nexus 5X.
  • Nexus 6P.
  • Nexus Player.
  • Pixel C.
  • Pixel.
  • Pixel XL.

The update's release date is August/September 2021.

Before the final release, two more test builds will be released. It’s safe to say that for all representatives of the Nexus line in this list, the update to the “eight” will be the last. Their active life cycle is already coming to an end - only security system updates remain. Thus, 2017 will be the year of the complete death of the Nexus line.

EMUI 5.0

If the Huawei P9 has been updated to the latest version of Android 7.0 Nougat with the EMUI 5.0 shell, it means that the user has access to:

  • Advanced system scaling option. In the settings section “ Display - Viewing Mode
    ” you can change the scale. This is certainly a good innovation, implemented in a very simplified version: not all components of the interface can be increased or decreased. In addition, after selecting a view, you must restart your smartphone;
  • Updated message design on the locked display. The prompt response functions are fully present here;
  • Multi-channel mode that works correctly with almost all popular applications;
  • Updated message menu. Now, instead of it, we can see Huawei’s proprietary solution. The EMUI 5.0 curtain has become more concise and comfortable than the stock version in Android 7.0. To get to the menu section you are interested in, just long press the switch icon;
  • Google Now is on the right side of the desktop.

Appearance and Design

EMUI 5.0 is not a clone of iOS on Android. There are certainly similarities, but the devil, as we know, is in the details.

Unlike their colleagues from Xiaomi, the developers of EMUI 5.0 have seriously simplified its interface. They simplified a total of more than 2 thousand different characteristics and up to 100 behavioral scenarios, which made use as fast and comfortable as possible. As a result, you only need 3 taps to access more than 90% of EMUI 5.0 features.

Chinese developers also took care of how to get rid of unintentional unlocking of the display. They processed up to 66 of the most popular scenarios and gestures, the implementation of which can lead to accidental unlocking.

The shell interface is extremely simplified. Now it is distinguished by even greater functionality and minimalism. The user has the opportunity to independently choose the type of desktop - with a full set of necessary applications or with a separate program menu, as is implemented in the stock version of Android.

Security and privacy in EMUI 5.0

The proprietary file manager contains a protected section called “Personal”

, designed for storing videos, pictures, music, photographs, documents. Here they are reliably protected from detection by unauthorized persons using special high-level encryption. So it will be very difficult even for an experienced hacker to hack such a storage facility.

The proprietary Manager application contains Avast antivirus. Considering the peculiarities of Android, this feature can be called dubious, but as a protection for the most naive, it is quite suitable.

Nice touches of EMUI 5.0 on Android 7.0 Nougat

Now let's go over the minor but very important features of the Huawei shell:

  • "Gestures"
    .
    You can find them in “Settings”
    in
    “Management”
    in the
    “Movements”
    . There are a bunch of them for a variety of tastes;
  • Charge level in wireless devices. This is something that most Android smartphones don't have. Everything is implemented extremely simply - in the status bar opposite the “Bluetooth”
    there is an image displaying the battery charge level;
  • Advanced "Energy Saving Mode"
    . An extremely functional item in the setup menu. It works more efficiently than its colleagues from other shells;
  • "Eye protection mode"
    . This mode minimizes UV radiation, which protects against eye fatigue. When this mode is activated, the screen glows yellow. This is an excellent find for those who like to use the phone in the dark. To automatically activate this mode, you can set a schedule, which is extremely convenient.

Among the minor innovations, it is also worth noting the configuration of navigation buttons, a control key, and the “ Do not disturb

».

Branded applications in Huawei EMUI 5.0

Reviewing the EMUI 5.0 shell on the Android 7.0 Nugat OS, one cannot help but recall the proprietary programs included in its starter package. Of course, we will not talk about all applications, since there are very many of them, but we will limit ourselves to only the most significant of them:

  • Dispatcher. A useful application that contains all the features necessary for a standard user, such as a black list, virus scanning, program removal, memory optimization function and others;
  • Weather. Stylish and perfectly designed weather application, very pleasant to use;
  • Notes. An excellent utility that allows you to record notes;
  • Gallery. This is a special application designed for processing images. Functionally, the gallery is simply cool. There is a function for quickly switching to folders, broken down by location and time. The speed of functioning of the “Gallery” is shocking: when you scroll through the photos, they appear instantly;
  • Music. A beautiful, but uncomfortable application designed for listening to audio tracks. Supports all formats.

Speed, smooth operation of EMUI 5.0 on Android 7.0 Nougat

The smooth performance and smooth functioning of EMUI 5.0 has its own unique features, among which the following should be highlighted:

  • Latest F2FS file system and RAM performance. Huawei has managed to create an effective memory compression and operational processing mechanism, thanks to which it is possible to increase the amount of RAM. The shell does not require regular manual cleaning of the memory, since the cleaning itself is carried out when the device is in standby mode. The latest file system protects user files from fragmentation. This file system has greater functionality compared to other Android smartphones;
  • Smooth and efficient scrolling of images and photos;
  • Optimizing the use of memory and processor resources.

Performance

In this OS, special attention was paid to performance capabilities. In particular, the developers stated that all smartphones running Android 8 will receive double the speed of the entire system, which will make downloading files, as well as the overall operation of applications, faster. These statements confirm the results of testing the OS in various benchmarks, where it demonstrates high performance indicators.

Thanks to the energy-saving Doze technology, battery life has been significantly increased. This technology is responsible for economical battery consumption. Also, some system applications are equipped with technology that significantly reduces the load on the device’s processor.

In addition, the system has improved the communication capabilities of smartphones in terms of Bluetooth and WI-FI. For example, when you connect other devices to your phone via Bluetooth, the smartphone will display the battery level of these connected devices. Regarding WI-FI, the version of Android in question provides a new Neighborhood Aware Networking technology, which ensures “communication” with other Android devices located close to each other, without additional equipment (routers or access points).

Huawei P9 firmware instructions

To install new firmware, you should strictly follow the following instructions:

  1. Go to the official Huawei support website, select the firmware you need and download it (it is possible to roll back Android from version 7 to version 6).
  2. Unzip the firmware file using the 7zip program.
  3. Next, in the root directory of the SD card or in the internal memory of the smartphone, create a folder called “dload”
    . In it, save the file called update.app unpacked in the previous step.
  4. Next, from your phone, go to “ Settings
    ” → “
    Updates
    ” → “
    Menu Item
    ” → “
    Local Updates
    ” → select update.app to begin installation.

If after the 4th step the installation process does not start, turn off the gadget.

"Power" keys

+
“Volume”
up and down at the same time. After this, the update process will start automatically.

China's largest telecom giant Huawei is also one of the largest OEMs of Android devices, and now that the company is among the top five Android smartphone manufacturers, everyone expects a lot from Huawei. The brand has grown significantly since last year, launching devices in almost every price segment, but not every device will receive the Android update.

The Chinese giant was also one of the first to release devices with Oreo out of the box. Along with Huawei and its series of smartphones, there is also its subsidiary Honor, which creates impressive devices at competitive prices. And in this article, we will look at which Huawei and Honor phones will receive the new Android update, namely the Android P 9.0 update. But first, let's see what features will come with the new OS.

Now, Huawei Mate 10 and P10, as well as almost all phones within the series, should receive the Android P update. Keep in mind that Huawei also has its own interfaces and AI tricks over the original Android. So, the update to the current operating flagship devices should be received before the end of 2021 or at the end of the fourth quarter of 2021.

However, when it comes to the Huawei P20, which is the successor to the P10 series phones, there is a slight chance that Huawei might debut Android P 9.0, but take this possibility with a grain of salt. If it debuts after October, we can expect Android P 9.0.

Bootloop protection

There are times when Android is overtaken by software problems, among which one of the most common is the cyclic reboot of the phone without the ability to start the system correctly. This is called Bootloop. This phenomenon occurs due to damage to the OS system software.

Previously, to combat the Bootloop problem, the user had to contact a service center. In this version of Android, the firmware provides the “Rescue Party” option, which controls the boot process of the phone and in the event of several repeated reboots of the phone, it boots the system in safe mode. This function significantly increases the security of data installed on the phone.

Honor phones eligible for Android P 9.0 update:

  • Honor 8 Pro;
  • Honor View 10 (Honor V10);
  • Honor V9;
  • Honor 9;
  • Honor 9 Lite;

Being a sub-brand of Huawei, Honor is characterized by the release of delayed, but completely flagship devices. By this we mean that the Honor 8 was not considered as an eligible device for the Android 8.0 Oreo update.

Likewise, while the devices mentioned above may certainly be eligible for the Android P 9.0 update, we assume that the Honor 9 Lite came with Android Oreo out of the box and is also a budget device and should receive at least one important update. It still comes down to Honor whether the company will put all its efforts into software development. The Android P 9.0 update is due to arrive on these devices in the first quarter of 2021, so we still have a long wait.

Safety

Google has removed the “Allow unknown sources” option from Android 8. Due to this, users are protected from potential malicious software that can be installed on the phone under the guise of important system updates from a third-party source. The "Install unknown applications" option is now tied to an application that the system will ask the user for permission to install before installing it.

This ensures that the user can independently control the installation of programs without the risk of unauthorized installation of potentially infected software. Also significantly improved is the Verify Apps application, which checks installed applications for hidden security risks. If the program detects any risk, the applications will not be installed on the phone.

Huawei and Honor phones that will not receive the Android P 9.0 update:

  • Huawei Mate 10 Lite
  • Huawei P10 Lite
  • Huawei G10
  • Huawei Nova 2i
  • (All phones in the series)
  • Honor 6X
  • Honor 5X
  • Honor 9i
  • Honor 8
  • Maimang 6
  • Honor Magic

With a huge lineup of devices at every price point and sub-category, a manufacturer will not be able to update all of its devices, above you can see over 8 phones that will not receive the Android P 9.0 update, while some of them are not even receiving the Android Oreo 8.0 update.

However, the company will definitely introduce some important security updates for these devices. Typically, this is exactly what the manufacturer says when they are not going to support the device with major updates, they are just offering security updates. Another reason that forms the list of devices deprived of the Android P 9.0 update is the fact that most Huawei and Honor smartphones run on traditional Kirin chipsets, which can become a barrier.

Another rumor circulating online is that the upcoming 9 won't be able to run on existing Huawei and Honor phones, and we're guessing that the main reason for this is the rigid AI implementation with the next-gen chipsets. Because with Android P 9.0, Google is introducing a new neural network API for developers to experiment with.

Since updating drivers for a new version of Android is a tedious task and requires significant investment in resources, they are redirected to flagship devices. This problem is partially addressed by Google's Project Treble program, which was introduced with Android 8.0 Oreo.

Android 8.0 for Xiaomi

Android 8.0 on Xiaomi is a sore subject for owners of gadgets from this Chinese manufacturer. The guys from Xiaomi regularly update their MIUI firmware, adding new features to it, but are too lazy to switch to new versions of the system. But still, MIUI 9 based on Android 8.0 will definitely see the light of day and many Xiaomi devices will receive this update:

  • Mi 6 / Mi 6 Plus.
  • Mi 5S / Mi 5S Plus.
