How to disable screen falling asleep in Android applications

On many Android smartphones and tablets, the screen turns off after 30 seconds of user inactivity. As a rule, this is the best option in which you can comfortably use the device and save its battery power. But there are times when you need to disable sleep mode while an application is running. Since this cannot be done using standard Android tools, we will tell you how to implement this in other ways.

Sleep mode on Android: what is it?

As you know, smartphone manufacturers have always tried to present devices with beautiful designs. Since modern devices are practically no different from each other in terms of the front side, companies are trying to make devices minimal in thickness. This is impossible without problems with batteries , which is why they do not have very high volumes. To make using devices more comfortable, various charge conservation measures are used, starting with the energy saving mode and ending with the function discussed in the article.

You shouldn't turn off sleep mode on Android just like that: do it only if your device has problems caused by this feature of Android. In addition, in some firmware it is impossible to deactivate this function without downloading third-party applications: by default, it only supports setting a large timeout, which must pass since the last action to enable sleep.

Examples of reasons for which you should change the sleep settings on your device: frequent screen shutdowns and problems with applications running in the background .
However, if you have already found this article, there is no point in describing for a long time the factors that should occur on your device, you should refer to the instructions presented on this page.

Activate energy saving mode

Perhaps the simplest and most obvious way to extend the operating time of Honor 9 is to enable proprietary power saving.

  • Go to Settings - Battery - Energy Saving Mode
  • When the mode is activated, the smartphone completely limits background activity and synchronization. This means that messages from instant messengers, emails and notifications (push) from other applications will not arrive on the device in a locked state.

    As a last resort, you can still see what they wrote to you - you need to open the desired application and all the missed information will begin to arrive.

    Enabling energy saving reduces the brightness of the display and reduces the number of interface animations - this also has a positive effect on the autonomy of the device.

    In addition, you can enable Ultra mode in the battery settings. Only calls and SMS will be available in it - this will allow you to use the device for more than a week without recharging.

    How to disable sleep mode on Android

    Smartphone settings

    "Clean" firmware

    If the smartphone manufacturer has not changed the operating system image, you will not be able to completely disable sleep mode without downloading additional software. However, nothing prevents you from setting a large time limit, after which this function will be activated:

    1. Open your device settings;

    2. Go to the “Screen” section;

    3. Tap “Advanced”;

    4. Click “Sleep mode;

    5. Set the maximum limit possible – 30 minutes.

    Changes will be applied instantly. They will not be reset after rebooting the smartphone, so it is unlikely that you will need to return to these settings in the future.

    Samsung

    New tablets and smartphones of this South Korean brand run on the One UI shell, for whose users the following procedure is relevant:

    1. Swipe from the bottom of the screen to the top to open the list of applications;

    2. Tap “Settings”;

    3. Open the “Display” tab;

    4. Select the Screen Timeout setting;

    5. Set to a suitable value.

    As you can see, there is also no way to disable sleep mode on Android using the control panel of the phone (or, as you can see from the screenshots, the tablet).

    Xiaomi

    Devices with MIUI firmware are one of the few devices for which it is possible to completely disable sleep mode through the settings menu. Just follow these instructions:

    1. After opening the device settings, go to the section called “Screen lock and fingerprint”;
    2. Click "Sleep";
    3. Select the "Don't turn off" option.

    Please note: older firmware versions do not have this button, so you will need to use third-party applications to completely deactivate sleep mode.

    Huawei and Honor

    If your phone is from one of these brands, it most likely runs EMUI firmware (with the exception of older models). You can deactivate sleep mode on your phone through the settings section. The instructions look almost identical to those presented by Xiaomi.

    Do the following:

    1. Launch the settings of your device;

    2. Go to the tab called “Screen”;

    3. Select the Sleep option;

    4. ABOUT.

    In the case of Magic UI, the procedure is exactly the same.

    Third Party Applications

    You can use solutions from software developers to prevent the device from automatically entering sleep mode.

    Stay Alive!

    One of the most famous applications among users facing problems with device sleep, it has a clear interface and is also compatible with Android 2.1 and newer versions, including the current eleventh release of the system.

    1. Its Russian-language version is presented on 4PDA, where there is also an APK file for downloading the program with cut out advertising. After downloading the software, tap on its icon that appears in the installed software menu;

    2. Check out the list of changes made in recent releases. Close the window by clicking on the “OK” button;

    3. If you are using Android 5 or higher, the Settings menu will open. Here you will need to find Stay Alive! and click on it;

    4. Allow the collection of additional device statistics so that the program can function;

    5. Select the second option (with the red lightning icon), which assumes the display is always on. The screen will remain on until you use the side lock button yourself.

    Buttons for quick control of the program will be displayed on the notification panel. You can hide notifications from this app by holding your finger on the alert and selecting Hide All. In this case, the ability to quickly adjust sleep mode settings will disappear, and you will need to open the program to change the options.

    Stay Awake

    A program with a similar name as the previous solution will also help avoid automatic screen shutdowns.

    1. . When the installation is complete, click on the program icon to open it;

    2. Please note the warning that the program was created for an older version of Android. Close it by tapping “OK”;

    3. Check the “Activate as boot” checkbox so that the utility starts automatically along with the phone. Click the "Activate" button located at the top of the screen.

    There is a paid version, with which you can control the operation of the software through the notification panel. It also claims to be ad-free, but we didn't find any ads in the regular, non-PRO release either.

    Screen ON

    This application, like the above software, will help in disabling sleep mode.

    1. Download the application from Google Play or another source. Open the program after downloading it;

    2. Click “OK” to close the warning about the purpose of the software for the old version of Android;

    3. Hide the window with information about recently made changes;

    4. Select what to do when the timeout specified in the operating system settings expires. The following solutions are supported: “Keep brightness”, “Dim screen” (Android does this automatically a few seconds before the display turns off), “Increase brightness to maximum”, “Reduce brightness to minimum”, “Set your own brightness settings”. Mark the appropriate action in the list yourself, or, if you don’t know what’s best, leave the default value, the first one. Then tap the Start button;

    5. Swipe right to access advanced settings. Set additional parameters if necessary. For example, it would be useful to activate the “Auto Start on boot” function. Unfortunately, it only works in the paid version of the program, like all the features presented in this section.

    Possible problems

    Sometimes situations arise when it is necessary to turn off the display of a mobile device without activating sleep mode. The standard option is to save the smartphone’s battery when it is connected to the TV using an HDMI cable.

    The main problem is that if you turn off the smartphone, the power will not flow through the HDMI cable, which will result in the TV screen fading as the phone is in sleep mode. Let's give one more example - an Android game is running on the tablet. A keyboard or mouse is then connected to the device using a docking station. The image is displayed on the screen. The mentioned problem is repeated. You can't turn off your phone screen without going to sleep mode. If you do nothing, the smartphone will quickly run out. It is impossible to solve the problem with standard settings.

    How to set up sleep mode

    Android has a small number of sleep mode settings, which is understandable even because it is impossible to disable it without downloading third-party programs in many firmwares. However, the possibility of prohibiting the device from switching to sleep mode while it is charging deserves a considerable amount of attention. This is possible through the hidden parameters section:

    1. Open the Settings app;

    2. Go to the tab called “System”;

    3. Expand the list of additional parameters;

    4. Click "About phone";

    5. Tap “Build Number” several times in a row until “Now” appears at the bottom of the screen. you became a developer»;

    6. Return to the previous options section. Tap “For Developers”;

    7. Move the toggle switch at the top to the right, and also activate the “Keep the screen on” function.

    Now, while the device is charging, sleep mode will not activate on its own.

    Setting the screen to turn off using third-party tools

    In the Google Play catalog you can find a large number of applications for managing Android sleep mode. Let's look at the most popular of them.

    Never-fading screen

    A small and lightweight application called "Stay Screen" disables sleep mode and prevents the screen from going dark while pre-selected applications are running.

    Working with the utility is extremely simple - run it and select those applications for which the screen will be constantly on.

    The utility correctly detects the software installed on a smartphone/tablet, is free and intuitive.

    Hold Screen On Demo

    An interesting application that uses the front camera so that the screen does not turn off while the user is looking at it. A camera controlled by Hold Screen On Demo monitors the user's eyes and as soon as he stops looking at the screen, the utility turns it off.

    Hold Screen On Demo allows you to configure a list of specific applications during which the camera will track the user's gaze and turn off the screen if the user leaves. The application is free and without advertising

    If these utilities are not suitable for you, then in the “Similar” section of Google Play you can always find alternatives to the tools discussed above

    When not to turn off sleep mode

    As we already mentioned, you should not turn off sleep mode on Android if there is no reason to do so. In addition, even when you are faced with frequent screen blackouts, a more suitable solution is to set a large time limit, only after which this feature will be activated. Actually, at the moment, the developers of Android and some firmware, including the One UI used in Samsung, are hinting.

    Sleep mode is designed to reduce battery consumption. It is a mistake to believe that after turning it off, the phone's battery life will increase.

    Applications

    In addition to standard options that allow you to change the operating time of the display before it locks, users can download special applications from the Play Store and App Gallery online stores. Let's give a couple of examples.

    Screen Timeout

    QR Code

    Screen Timeout

    Developer: lhoer0

    Price: Free

    The application is in English, but its interface is very intuitive. Unlike the standard function, it offers more time options, ranging from 5 seconds to 30 minutes.

    Screen ON

    QR Code

    Screen on

    Developer: EONSOFT

    Price: Free

    This application will appeal to those who do not know how to turn off sleep mode when the USB cable is connected. Screen ON will make sure that the device does not fall asleep when the user is charging it or connecting it to a computer to transfer data. The program interface is Russified and intuitive.

    Problems and solutions

    The screen still turns off

    The problem is relevant only when using third-party software. First of all, check whether it is possible to deactivate sleep mode through the device settings. If this is the case, you should set this parameter in the gadget settings. Otherwise, find another application, since from time to time updates released by Google “break” the old functionality, and it is not a fact that long-released software will be suitable for your device (however, in the case of the applications listed above, there are no problems on a relatively new the Galaxy Tab S6 tablet did not occur).

    If you find a suitable program, please share information about the application and the device you are using in the comments under this post.
