Which is better: Huawei or Honor branded smartphones?
The identification of individual brands and sub-brands by smartphone manufacturers is a common thing in modern times. BBK is developed in parallel by three subsidiaries: Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus.
Lenovo has the sub-brands Moto and ZUK in its arsenal, while Xiaomi includes budget devices in the Redmi line. Huawei is also doing this, releasing smartphones under the main brand and the Honor sub-brand.
The question may naturally arise, which is better: Huawei or Honor smartphones? How do they differ anyway?
Why do we need the Honor brand?
In response to questions from reporters, George Zhao (head of Honor's division) gave a clear explanation several years ago.
The sub-brand was created to promote inexpensive smartphones aimed at active youth. Huawei offers smartphones of all categories, and their promotion is very similar to the marketing of the same Samsung.
And the name Honor itself is more convenient for the global market. In the original, Huawei is pronounced close to “ua-way,” but it is sometimes difficult for a European to say it exactly the same way as a Chinese. With the English word Honor there should be fewer such linguistic problems.
What is the difference between Honor and Huawei models?
In short: both lines feature devices of different types. Competition in the market has led to the fact that the clear distinction between brands has become blurred.
Now the manufacturer itself is simply developing both directions, and sometimes uses different names for different regions.
Differences may include support for different communication standards, memory amounts and additional functions (such as the presence/absence of NFC or a fingerprint scanner). It’s impossible to say unequivocally which is better: it all depends on the model.
- Honor 8 Pro and V9 are the same device, the second model is for China, and is equipped with 128 (instead of 64) GB of memory.
- Huawei P8 Lite (2017) is very difficult to understand. It is also sold as P9 Lite (2017) in Turkey, GR3 (2017) in India and the Middle East, Nova Lite in Japan and Honor 8 Lite in Russia. The regular model is equipped with 3/16 GB of memory, and the Indian (which is strange) – 4/64 GB. Huawei P8 Lite (2017) and Honor 8 Lite
- The G9 Lite model is the most powerful, it got 3/32 GB of memory, but the P9 Lite and Honor 8 Smart (Indian modification) were equipped with only 2/16 GB.
- Huawei Enjoy 6S is also called Nova Smart and Honor 6C, the Nova model has 2/16 GB of memory, others – 3/32 GB.
- Huawei GR5 (2016) with memory increased from 2/16 to 3/32 GB is sold as Honor 5X. But a model with 2/16 GB is also presented under this name.
- Huawei Mate 9 Lite is also rich in versions: in Ukraine it is known as GR5 (2017), and in Russia – as Honor 6X. No differences in hardware were noticed. Huawei GR5 (2017) and Honor 6X
- The Honor Note 8 smartphone is known in its homeland as Honor V8 Max, and the differences are only in communication standards.
- The Honor 7 Lite (Chinese name) and Huawei GT3 (sold in Ukraine) are the same model, but the Honor 5C (officially presented in Russia) is identical in everything except a fingerprint scanner (it does not have one). Huawei GT3 and Honor 5C
- Huawei Y6 Pro is also known as Honor 5X Play and Enjoy
- Huawei Y3 II is identical in appearance to the Honor Bee 2 model (Indian exclusive), but runs on the old MT6582 chipset without LTE, while the “Indian” got MT6735 with 4G.
- The “big brother” Huawei Y5 II was also equipped with the old MT6582, and its twin Honor 5 Play – with the more recent MT
- The Y6 II model is also known as Honor Holly 3, under this name the device is sold in India.
There are other smartphones that were simultaneously released under two names, but they have already been discontinued and have almost disappeared from sale.
As can be seen from the list, the manufacturer does not make a clear distinction (for example, branding improved versions with the main name): sometimes Honor is slightly better than its analogue, but sometimes vice versa. Therefore, it is impossible to say unequivocally which is better.
To avoid mistakes, it is better to take the version for your region. That is, Ukrainian buyers would be better off with the same Huawei GR5 (2017), and Russians would be better off with the Honor 6X.
Differences and similarities between lines
We discussed the difference between Honor and Huawei, and talked about the stages of the emergence and development of brands. It's time to move on to the internal content and external component!
Differences
First, let's talk about the difference between Huawei and Honor:
- Logo. Huawei brand smartphones are decorated with a stylized image of a lotus, while Honor brand phones have the name;
- Design. The youth segment of Honor has an attractive, bright design - non-standard colors, interesting solutions, removable panels. The parent company Huawei prefers classic design and muted shades.
Until recently, the difference could be called cost - but in 2021, inexpensive models from both manufacturers are on the market. Often, even an experienced user will not be able to guess what the difference is - the flagships of the Honor and Huawei brands are identical, differing only in the presence of an inconspicuous feature.
Similarities
We figured out what the difference is between Huawei and Honor - it's time to talk about the similarities! You will find many important parameters:
- Own HiSilicon chipsets;
- Corporate user interface EMUI (Emotion UI) for the Android shell;
- Kirin processors;
- Same Mali GPUs;
- A similar package of pre-installed user services.
How to answer the question, which smartphone is better – Huawei or Honor? Both manufacturers are equally good - low cost, excellent quality. The devices boast high performance and a pleasant design - every user will find their own option. One thing to note is that Huawei offers the best camera. Let's look at popular models in several segments?
Honor 10 review is better than Huawei P20
A new product from Huawei, although Honor asks to call itself a separate brand, but you and I know that all this comes from one trough. This is Honor 10 and, unfortunately, it was presented in China earlier than in the rest of the world. Therefore, we knew almost everything about this phone in advance. At least what we managed to translate from Chinese.
Just by the color it is already clear that Honor 10 has adopted the design from Huawei p20. There will be four colors here - midnight black, ice gray, and also two mixed colors. The gradients are not the same as on p20. Therefore, the phones can be distinguished. This is good. But they are similar.
Next is the bangs. We won’t hide it, we’re not happy about it, but there’s nothing we can do about it. Although the phone has a so-called mode: if you want the owner, I’ll be your iPhone, or if you want, I’ll be your Samsung. So you can live.
Let's skip the Emotion UI topic right away. He is here. It is the same Chinese, slightly updated. Although in fairness it is worth noting that the Huawei p20 Pro was well configured for bare Android by changing the launcher and installing a new theme. So even Emotion UI can look like a normal shell. Here it is version 8.1 Android is also 8.1. And also NFC and Bluetooth 4.2. The spotty one was not delivered.
The arrangement of the elements is standard. Again, I want to compare it with Huawei p20 because there is nothing left from the old Honor here. This is just such a flagship flagship.
And we won’t be surprised if people choose between Honor 10 and Huawei p20.
The aluminum frame is painted to match the color of the body. There is an infrared port and a slot for 2 SIM cards. Unfortunately, Micro SD cannot be inserted. And finally the sound is stereo and once again this is a good smartphone with good sound.
The most important difference is this button under the screen. It has become simply sensory and is located under glass. It has a fast fingerprint scanner and works well. There is also a face unlock. It also works lightning fast.
Screen
IPS matrix has a resolution of 2280 by 1080 pixels, a ratio of 19:9, and the screen diagonal is 5.84 inches, but it feels in the hand like a smartphone with a 5.2-inch diagonal and is generally very compact.
Honor 10 camera
On the front it’s still the same 24 megapixels. The camera is really very good, but you can immediately see that it is not a reference one. On the back there are 16 and 24 megapixels and you already realized that the camera is not from Huawei p20. Although she is good, she is one level lower. So, let's test it.
But there are many different smart features here, it even says “AI Camera” on the back, there is face recognition, object recognition, there are more scenes, horizon leveling is useful, and for the selfie camera there is a Light Fusion function that improves your photo.
There is also a group music playback function. You can simultaneously connect up to 9 phones and play the “Magadan” song, for example, at the entrance. An excellent function that works using a QR code and is simply an irreplaceable thing at a drive-in party.
Price for Honor 10
In Russia and Ukraine, the smartphone will begin to be sold very soon. But prices are not yet known. Nevertheless, on April 27 it already went on sale in China and there it costs 2600 and 3000 yuan in dollars, which is approximately 415 - 460. And by the way, in Russia the version with 6 GB of RAM will not be only 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of internal memory and 4 GB with 128 GB of internal memory
Screen
The diagonal size of Huawei and Honor smartphones differs slightly - only 0.04 inches. The screen type is identical: if the Huawei P20 Pro phone is equipped with an OLED display, then the P20 and Honor 10 have an IPS matrix. The display resolution is also virtually the same: 2280x1080 on Honor and 2244x1080 on Huawei, but the pixel density on the P20 is slightly lower - 428 ppi versus 432 ppi on the 10 . The screen settings are exactly the same for both models, so it is very difficult to determine which smartphone is preferable based on this parameter.

Gadgets
Hello Geektimes! Your dear editors attended the presentation of a new smartphone on May 15 - Honor 10. It is already sold in China, and probably someone is already bringing it to Russia, but now there is an official version that will be sold for 27 or 30 thousand rubles. By today's standards, the line is still relatively budget-friendly, but the gadgets in it have top-end characteristics. Below the cut, we will share our first impressions and compare the capabilities of the new product’s built-in camera with the flagship Huawei P20 and the no longer young, but still relevant iPhone 7 Plus.
It seems like Huawei had some kind of tactic from the very beginning that the company is sticking to. Every year in February they release another flagship - Huawei P9, P10, and then P20. Then, after a couple of months, a smartphone under the Honor brand appears on the scene, which largely replicates the top model, but costs almost half the price. Last year, this was the case with Honor 9, which became a budget analogue of the Huawei P10, and this time we have a cheaper copy of the Huawei P20. And since the current flagship turned out to be especially good in terms of camera, in the case of Honor 10 you can immediately count on wide photographic capabilities. True, the camera here is different - the same as in last year's Honor View 10.
Design
It looks good, but something tells me that Honor 10 in a black case will be more popular. This is exactly what we turned over in our hands.

Additional features
Smartphones are equipped with two SIM slots in nano format with alternating operating modes . Both devices are equipped with a number of sensors: light, G-sensor, compass and gyroscope, Hall sensor. At the same time, the P20 also has color temperature and proximity sensors. In addition, smartphones support 4G LTE, 3G, 2G, and are also equipped with wireless modules: NFC, WiFi, Bluetooth. There are navigation systems - GPS, Glonass, BeiDou.
The devices have different configurations. Both smartphones included a charging block with a USB-C cable and a key for a SIM card. In addition, the P20 is equipped with headphones with a USB-C plug, a transparent case and an adapter from USB-c to 3.5 mm. Honor 10 comes with a TPU case and film.
Comparison of Honor 10 and Huawei P20 - who is cooler?
It's hard to choose between a good and a very good phone. It is worth comparing different parameters, including cameras, screens, processor and performance, a set of wireless technologies and battery life. Below are the characteristics and differences between these smartphones.
Parameters in the table
Huawei P20 | Honor 10 | |
OS | Android 8.1 (Oreo) | Identically |
Screen | IPS, 5.8 inches, 2240×1080, 429 ppi | IPS, 5.84 inches, 2280×1080, 432 ppi |
SoC | Hisilicon Kirin 970 + Mali-G72 MP12 | Identically |
Memory | 4 GB RAM + 128 GB disk | Identically |
Rear camera |
|
|
Frontal | 24 MP, f/2 | Identically |
Battery | 3400 mAh, fast charging | Identically |
Modules and connectors | Wi-Fi 5 GHz, Bluetooth 4.2 + aptX HD, USB Type-C 1.0, fingerprint scanner | Identically |
The table shows that the main differences concern the cameras. The screens are approximately the same, as is the hardware.
Displays
This comparison uses materials from the GSMArena website. Phone screens are almost equal in diagonal, resolution and, therefore, pixel density. Other parameters:
Huawei P20 (in Max Auto mode) | Honor 10 | |
Black brightness, cd/m2 | 0.328 (0.481) | 0.326 |
White brightness, cd/m2 | 477 (695) | 508 |
Contrast | 1454 (1445) | 1558 |
At 100% backlight, the smartphones show equal results in terms of black depth and contrast. The only advantage of the Huawei P20 is the Max Auto mode, which is appropriate to turn on when using the smartphone in the sun - the brightness increases, the content is clearly visible, but the contrast level decreases.
There are no significant differences – the displays of Honor 10 and P20 are equal.
Processor and performance
Considering that the phones have equal hardware platforms - HiSilicon Kirin 970 - a high difference in performance is excluded. The Kirin 970 chipset itself is the best processor after the Kirin 980 with a Mali-G72 video core and 8 computing units: Cortex-A53 + Cortex-A73.
Results of testing phones in benchmarks:
GeekBench 4.1 (single-core)
GeekBench 4.1 (multi-core)
AnTuTu 7
In all benchmarks, the devices are close to each other, which is obvious from the graphics. However, in Antutu there is a slight advantage of the Huawei P20 of 6000 points, although in practice the difference in operating speed is impossible to notice.
P20 and Honor 10 are not the fastest phones in the world even at the time of release, and even more so now that the new HiSilicon Kirin 980 is already used in the new Mate 20 Pro. However, the hardware in these phones will definitely be relevant for the next 3-4 years.
Autonomy
Surprisingly, the batteries in the smartphones have the same capacity – 3400 mAh, plus both support fast charging technology. According to the GSMArena website, here are the results of testing phone batteries:
Huawei P20 battery is enough for:
- 16:33 hours of communication on the 3G network.
- 13:58 hours surfing the Internet.
- 12:13 h video playback.
Charging using the “native” SuperCharge adapter at 4.5V/5A from zero to 65% lasts only 30 minutes.
The Honor 10 battery can withstand:
- 21:14 hours of communication on a 3G network.
- 11:50 a.m. surfing the Internet.
- 11:37 hours of video playback.
The kit also includes a 4.5V/5A SuperCharge adapter, which charges the phone from 0 to 65% in 30 minutes. At the same time, the smartphone remains cold. That is, Honor 10 will last longer when communicating on a 3G network, but the P20 is able to play videos and work with the browser longer. Again, there are no serious differences, as well as a winner.
Cameras
The rear sensors are the only thing that differentiates the phones. First, the dry characteristics:
P20 – main camera with 2 modules:
- Color sensor: 12 MP, f/1.8, 1/2.3 inch, 1.55 µm
- Monochrome: 20 MP, f/1.6, 27 mm
- Leica optics, 2X-zoom
Honor 10 – main 2-module camera:
- Color sensor: 16 MP, f/18
- Monochrome: 24 MP, f/18
And although the sensors in the phones are different, they work the same: the color sensor captures color; monochrome – light. The algorithm then processes the received data in one image and as a result we see a final photo with a wide dynamic range. AI technology is also supported - automatic scene recognition and preset installation. The AI works dubiously and often distorts colors.
Honor 10 portraits
Honor 10Honor 10
Subjectively: Huawei P20 shows better photography results, but the differences are minimal. There is no obvious winner - on all fronts the phones are equal and worth each other. My recommendation is to take the cheaper smartphone of the two, that is, Honor 10 – prices and the best offers from sellers are shown in the table above.
Battery and autonomy
The batteries on smartphones are the same - non-removable, lithium-ion, with a capacity of 3400 mAh. At the same time, the autonomy of the gadgets is different: when launching games, Honor 10 lasts longer, but in reading mode it is inferior to its competitor. The operating time in video viewing mode is the same for both devices.
On a note! An accelerated charging option is available for both gadgets - in less than half an hour, the smartphone battery is charged to 50%. The network adapter is connected via the USB Type-C port.
Honor 10 vs Huawei P20 way more similar than you may realize
The Honor 10 has arrived, packing high-end specs at an affordable price, but it's somewhat similar to a phone you could already buy, namely the Huawei P20.
That's because Honor is a sub-brand of Huawei, so their latest flagships have a number of things in common, yet the Huawei P20 costs a fair bit more.
With that in mind we've created this guide to their similarities and differences to give you an idea of where your money goes and whether the Huawei P20 is worth the extra expense.
Honor 10 vs Huawei P20 design
The Honor 10's back is certainly shiny
The Honor 10 and Huawei P20 both have a glass back and both have a similar color-changing trick, as certain shades of these phones will shift between colors depending on the light and angle you hold them at.
That aside, both have a fairly plain back, but the Honor 10's is arguably showier as its 15-layer construction causes light to dance on its surface.
Both phones have metal frames and if you flip them to the front you'll find that both have slim bezels and a notch (which can optionally be hidden).
The Huawei P20 is less shiny, but just as capable of changing color
Dimensions meanwhile are 149.1 x 70.8 x 7.7mm in the case of the Huawei P20 and 149.6 x 71.2 x 7.7mm in the case of the Honor 10, which is to say they're very similarly sized, but the Huawei P20 is negligibly smaller. It's slightly heavier though, at 165g to the Honor 10's 153g.
Honor 10 vs Huawei P20 display
Both phones have a notch and similar sized screens
As well as similar designs, these two phones also have very similar screens. The Honor 10 has a 5.84-inch 1080 x 2280 IPS LCD display, an aspect ratio of 19:9 and a pixel density of 432 pixels per inch, while the Huawei P20 has a 5.8-inch 1080 x 2240 IPS LCD screen with an aspect ratio of 18.7:9 and a pixel density of 429 pixels per inch.
So the Honor 10's screen is ever so slightly larger, higher resolution and sharper, but it really is a very small difference.
To judge the actual quality of the Honor 10's screen we'll have to look beyond specs, so keep an eye out for that in our full review, but the Huawei P20's screen impressed us.
Honor 10 vs Huawei P20 OS and power
There's little difference between the specs of these two phones
There's also not much to choose when it comes to power, as both the Honor 10 and Huawei P20 have an octa-core Kirin 970 chipset. That's a high-end chipset, so you can expect solid performance from either phone.
In the Huawei P20's case that's paired with 4GB of RAM, while the Honor 10 is landing in both 4GB and 6GB versions (4GB in the UK). As for storage, you get 128GB with the Huawei P20 and either 64GB or 128GB with the Honor 10 (128GB in the UK), and neither phone has a microSD card slot.
Both phones run Android Oreo overlaid with EMUI 8.1, so there's nothing to choose there, and as they're both similarly new they may well get supported with updates for the same period of time.
Design
Honor 10 was released in May 2021, Huawei P30 Light - in March 2021. If you compare the appearance of the devices, you will notice that both smartphones have a rectangular shape and rounded edges. Both have large screens that occupy the main area of the front panel. For Honor 10 it is 80% (85 cm²), for P3 it is 84% (94 cm²).
But Huawei 10 may upset buyers with a relic of the past - a wide bottom frame on which the fingerprint sensor is located. It is no longer available in the P30 Lite. The bottom frame is slightly thicker than the side ones, but not significantly, and the fingerprint sensor has moved to the back side.
The top frames are thin on both devices, but on Huawei Honor 10 the front camera is located on a small monobrow, while on H30 Lite it is in a teardrop-shaped notch.
The body of the 10 model is made of aluminum and glass, while the P30 uses polycarbonate. Honor's rear camera block is located horizontally, while Huawei P30 Light's is vertical. An LED flash is installed in the same row as the camera. Both smartphones, Honor 10 and Huawei P30, are stylish, durable, and easy to use.
conclusions
We did not compare all parameters with each other, but only the main ones. According to these parameters, the Honor 20 turned out to be better with 12 likes, while the Honor 10 had 6. What we liked about each model:
